It probably has to do with what you put after <
The problem is that < and > are starting and ending tags for html. So for example if you wanted to make a word bold you would put <b> before it and </b> after it. So it may be possible that if you put type "<b" or something similar that the forum could get screwed up and not show anything after that.
BTW It shows up in here because html is disabled in this forum. If you were to copy what I said above into the Heavyweights forum you wouldn't see <b> and </b> and instead the words "before it and" would be bold.
