I had Chuck winning but I'm super biased.
Also I tend to value sub attempts that have some substance to them more than control and judges do not agree, despite it *possibly* being the correct interpretation of the scoring criteria as they're written.
Another example of this is Evloev v. Lopes.

Yep, rank squatting is real and it's happening in pretty much every division nowadays.

Also missing out on the Islam rematch because he got cut in his very last sparring session before flying out to Abu Dhabi was a huge set-back for him - he could've fought him like 18 months ago, instead now he is still on the shelf while likely Islam fights Topuria this Summer, which means he might have to rematch Gaethje or Arman before getting another shot.

Yeah, it’s a shame that the champ chose to fight a guy from the lower weight class twice, avoiding the backup fighter who was prepared and ready, this fight could have kept the division going. Next he insisted that the real contenders from the LW division should be matched against each other and he chose to fight a guy who is retiring next.

Rank squatting was more of a problem before that, now people are inactive because you never know when the champ chooses to fight next time and you better be ready and free because of timelines…

You know the difference here?? Alex actually has real fans, true fans that like him personally and as a fighter. Fans that are invested into Alex and get excited for his fights. Ankalaev fans are nothing more than Khabib and Islam disciples who are jealous and envious and pray for the downfall of the guy that everyone likes and is a fan favorite. All you clowns don't really even care about Ankalaev.

I don't think anyone labeled him LW goat. But after Justin the talks began of him being LW goat and it was dependent on how his next few fights would go, which really wasn't too much of a reach considering what he accomplished at LW.
 
He's still good, but that run up to the title was incredible. It's like he couldn't be stopped until he hit Islam. A huge peak of a prime. Reminded me of Lawler or Bisping being champ material out of no where.

Kind of seeing history through a very shaded lens.

The UFC felt Volk deserved a chance at being double champ when he asked for it and Islam doesn’t turn down fights. He took it in enemy territory with weight cutting/rehydration rules not in his favor. Fought an all-time great fighter in Volk and gave us a legendary fight.

I don’t believe he chose to fight Volk instead of Gamrot due to the Oliviera cut two week before the fight, that’s a UFC decision not an “Islam is ducking real contenders” decision. He’d likely run through Gamrot, but ultimately the UFC is the one that offers the fight and decided who gets the shot. They’ll offer the same fight to multiple fighters just for leverage and lie through their teeth about it.

Don’t know what you mean about “he chose to fight a guy who is retiring next” - he got offered Arman the #1 contender, accepted, then Arman botched his weight cut and Islam got offered Moicano to save the card.

Now he’s likely fighting Topuria because that’s what the UFC wants. The UFC decides when champs fight based on how big a star they are, what region they’re from, what cards line up for them to be used properly, etc. It’s an algorithmic way to approach making fights and it’s all based around maximizing value.

We can blame Charles for getting Volk ruined by an aging Volk by getting cut in his last sparring season, which got the UFC to offer Volk a bag to make the fight happen and the lure of legacy (might never get the chance again/the circumstances) and bucket of cash (couple million and a new improved contract) he took the fools gold.

But ultimately it’s the UFC’s fault more then any one fighter - Islam, Charles, Justin, Volk, Chandler…they are all under the thumb of the UFC to dance to their beat, the promotion decides who to offer who to whom when, where and why. They’ve got all the leverage and control with the contract language, so if they want to squeeze you they have a lot of methods to do so. It’s in their interest if they are worth something to play ball enough to satisfy fighters while profiting grossly off them as an assert.

This is just how the game works, sad to say.
