Why is it in MMA that cornerman don’t protect their fighters? Cornerman rarely throw in the towel and will let their fighters take severe brain damage before stopping the fight. Volks vs Ortega is the latest example. Ortega is laying there concussed after the 3rd round but his corner doesn’t protect him and sends him put to take more brain damage.

Corners are quicker to pull the trigger in Boxing but unfortunately the two sports have different cultures. Couldn't tell you why but my theory is that MMA is the more dynamic sport, in which the loser has more ways to come back from the beating and make a comeback.

Ortegas two near subs on Volk didn't help him as far as getting saved from his people. That probably gave them enough hope to not stop it.

Bc they probably get paid more if he wins lol. Honestly I'd stop more fights way earlier if I was cornering and you just didn't seem to have a way to win and we're talking damage like that. It's a tough call but in the end being to tough for your own good is a real thing and someone needs to save you from yourself.

take it easy. we're not making a western here

Problem with that is that at the time no one knew Ortega would have a strong fifth.
Well apparently Ortega's corner knew, or at least strongly believed it...right?, otherwise why would they let him continue if they thought he had nothing left to give?

Honestly it was pretty laughable. Herb Dean and a doctor from the commission are having a conversation with Ortega and he’s so concussed he has no idea what’s being said. Ortega is continually asked “how many fingers” and he keeps getting it wrong. The ref and commission continue with the facade that they care about the fighters health while the fighter is standing there with brain damage.

This, in Boxing when there is a clear trend there is rarely any comeback, in MMA guys have comeback from situations where a fight could had been stopped and no one would had said anything.

If it takes that long to tell wether a guy can continue, its probably best to stop the fight.

Ortega then fought for 2 more rounds and had a strong 5th, they're trying to win, next.
There was no way he was pulling a sub out of his ass after the third round (gassed arms and legs). So at that point you need to think about the future. This isn’t about how much punishment Ortega can take. It’s about fighting again another day, and quality of life moving forward.

Stop the fight. Most of them don’t give a shit.

If Ortega’s corner threw in the towel at that point in any of his fights he would have the towel thrown like every fight he is in.
Those were three round fights, where he pulled a sub out of his ass. After blowing out his arms and legs in the 3rd in this fight. There was no way he was getting a sub in 4-5. Context matters. And they let the guy take too much punishment in a fight it as extremely likely he was NEVER going to win.

Because they thought he had it in him to finish Volk.

Im not saying it was right or wrong to let him fight. Im no coach and certainly haven't trained with Ortega.

What i am saying is no one would have complained if they saved his braincells after the 4th. Hell, Ortega was technically finished at the end of the third, as he couldn't walk to the stool himself.

Alot of corners let their fighter go on to take more punishment in hopes of finishing the fight.

I bet you Kattars corner was just as sure as Ortegas corner that he would win.
