After a couple more horrible scorecards yesterday I had some questions.

Here's an article FROM 2013 talking about how he was already "inept at his job for years"

Here's an article showing how he's the busiest UFC judge in 2020, #2 in 2019, #1 in both 2018 and 2017 and so on and so forth.

Athletic commissions choose their judges, right? This guy does fights in Vegas, Florida, Texas, Brazil, Abu Dhabi, etc.

What's the rationale for flying this guy around the world (and does the UFC pay for it?) instead of getting someone local or anyone who knows what they're actually doing? Seriously how does someone go about getting that job.

This is how UFC tries to control fights. Have the company ref (Herb Dean) and company judge (Sal D'Amato) do their best to influence everything.

So you think the UFC strong arms commissions into insisting that he be the judge? It's possible. Him being everywhere around the world doesn't make sense.

He’s also the only judge who gave Burgos the second round. He’s also one of the two dorks that gave Ige the win over Edson so the fucker might just hate kicks.

I'm listening to Big John and Josh Thomson as I type this and they're arguing about that and big John thinks Burgos won the second round.

athletic commissions are state run organizations with basically no oversight. they do not care about the compentency of their employees.

sal has been on the losing side of 44 split decisions, the most of any judge in mma history. would be interesting to see that normalized to number of split decisions, but either way, yes he is a poor judge.

I mean, it was close, I’m not that mad at it but it seemed like all the key strikes were on edsons side like spinning kicks landing clean and that last flying knee.

It's crazy how judges in boxing and MMA face no consequences for being awful at their jobs.
How do they actually get to be judges? Is there any criteria?

Considering how bad he is at judging, he is probably quite cheap. And Dana likes cheap.

How do you know the athletic commissions pay for Sal D'Amato's plane tickets? Tbh I don't know what the judges are paid. But basically he's experienced, there aren't really that many professional MMA judges, and it's less questionable when you use a judge that everybody uses. Texas has a reputation for questionable judging in combat sports so that's the risk when you put a bunch of local judges in charge.

Weirdest scorecards of the night came from 2 judges I'd never heard of before in Grundy vs. Vannata (Patrick Patlan 30-27 Grundy, Marcos Rosales 27-30 Vannata).

if they had competent judges decision time would be boring
instead it's always a heart-in-the-mouth adrenaline moment. more adrenaline, more controversy = more clicks, more views
who better than Sal D'Tomato to assure this chaotic randomness in judging?

This 10000x

It's just pure corruption.
The people who run this sports are nasty rotten old corrupt rich guys who prey on a sport of young warriors giving up their lives.

There are tens of thousands of people who would gladly work their ass off for years for the chance to be a legit fair ref or judge and these fuckers get the same gigs over and over because they are henchmen for a boss.
I would love nothing more than the fans of this sport to somehow can them from power. It's so gross.
