The year was 2011. It was a simpler time: Barack Obama was settling into his first term as President, global pandemics were things of the distant past that you read about in history books, and being "woke" simply meant waking up in the morning.

In the UFC world, GSP and Anderson were in the midst of their lengthy reigns of dominance, the WEC had just been purchased adding the new FLW/BW/FW divisions to the UFC, and Dana was still insistent that women would never fight in the UFC.

On Oct 29, 2011, Nick Diaz went to war with BJ Penn and got his hand raised after a 15 min Fight of the Night battle. Little did fight fans know, that that would be the last time we would see Nick Diaz get a W- At least until now, a decade later, when Nick is talking about a potential return to the Octagon. Let's take some time to take a look back at the world in October 2011:

Someone Like You by Adele was the #1 song in the world (and Adele was still fat)

LeBron James was coming off his first year with the Heat, losing in the finals to the Mavs. LeBron had never won an NBA championship at that point and people were still questioning whether he ever would (he's won 4 now).

The final Harry Potter film was the number 1 box office movie of the year. As of this point, a "Marvel Cinematic Universe" movie had yet to be #1 at the box office for a year. That would all change going forward, as a Marvel movie would be #1 in each of the next 3 years, and 5 of the following 8.

A skinny young Irish lad named Conor McGregor had just made his debut in the Cage Warrior organization, getting a first round TKO win over Aaron Jahnsen.

Meanwhile in Russia, a young man named Khabib Nurmagomedov was making noise in the ProFC organization, compiling a 16-0 MMA record, including 7 wins in the 2011 year alone. Khabib was about to sign with the UFC and would make his debut for the organization the following year vs Kamal Shalorus.

Earlier in the year, President Obama announced the killing of Osama Bin Laden, in one of the most significant political events in modern American history.

Just a couple weeks before the Diaz/Penn fight, Steve Jobs, founder and CEO of Apple and one of the most visionary minds of our time, passed away at the age of 56.

Later in the year, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il would pass away, paving the way for his son Kim Jong Un to take over as the Supreme Leader.

*this thread was made for fun and I'm a big Nick Diaz fan and excited to see him fight again, even if he hasn't won a fight in a full decade.

Last time Nick Diaz won a fight Cain was still champion.

Zuffa already owned WEC and they merged into ufc adding BW and FW as well as adding LWs to the already existing division. You’re history sucks

...yup back in his prime when he was supposed to fight GSP but the UFC dicked him around for missing a presser then he went on to lose decisions to two GOATS and a point fighter.

Nick and Nate Diaz are so underappreciated considering the objectively great fights they've given us. oh well.

And with all the drinking he does, one kick to the liver might just kill him.

He’s not even that old but I predict he looks like a really sad old man when he finally gets in there.

I was very impressed by the way he beat BJ, he really punished him at the end and that was not a easy thing to do until then.

The last time that Nick Diaz won a fight-

Jon Jones was UFC Champion
Jose Aldo was fighting for a UFC Title
Lebron James was in the NBA finals
Tom Brady was getting ready to play in another Super Bowl.

All those things happened in 2020 as well, not much has changed bro.
