I've viewed him as a BJJ specialist who picked up a lot of striking skill while in the UFC, but he's been subbed several times himself by guys like Pettis, Lamas and Miller.

I actually like him as a striker, solid stand up game which eventually could lead to easy subs.

Quite looking forward to this one.

7. Maybe 6.5 if you want to be nitpicky.

Pettis is a blackbelt isn't he? I think he has a underestimated ground game.

I would give it an 8.

It is still unclear how Oliveira deals with getting hit hard - none of his last 8 opponents have hit him. He also got submitted by Pettis and Lamas lol

In MMA alone, not in terms of like compared to BJJ competitors?

Offensive submissions: 8 maybe 9

Defensive submissions: maybe 6

Offensive positional: hard to say. Seemingly continually improving. Up to 7ish?

Defensive positional: aside from attacking with sub attempts and some slick sweeps, its not great. 4 or 5?

Dude the optimal ratio to win UFC title today is 60% Master of Striking; 30% Wresting and 10% BJJ. As the rounds progress into 2nd, 3rd etc... The weight of importance shifts to 40% Striking, 50% Wresting and 10% BJJ (still). BJJ importance has been downgraded as of late, shifting importance to knowing more BJJ defense from not getting into Guillotine, giving up your back, or arm.

Having said all this, Olivera is close to achieving that goldilock balance IMHO.

10/10. I knew right away with this guy when he joined the ufc. His ground offense in mma is second to none. There are definitely guys who can out grapple him. I expected that but I knew he would be a problem for everyone based on his style . And so has been the case as he now holds the record. He has the most exciting style to watch and when he does get you his subs are brutal. Awesome fighter and he put it together with his hands too. chandlers biggest challenge

It's absolutely elite.

Yes he was submitted by Pettis and Lamas, but you have to look at those fights with context. Oliveira was absolutely killing himself to make 145. In both fights, he was dominating the grappling exchanges early and almost finished both of them several times, but then got dead tired and completely gassed and made bad mental mistakes and got caught in submissions. The cut to 145 was brutal for him. When he doesn't gas, his BJJ game is nearly unmatched in the current MMA landscape. And at 155, he's no longer gassing after 1 or 2 rounds. Anyone rating his BJJ game anything less than 9 is simply incorrect, IMO at least.
