Just woke up but basically UFC had the votes in NY but Sheldon Silver was talking cash to stop it at the time.
Despite his prominent role in preventing mixed martial arts from being legalized in New York, most of the sport’s fans probably never heard of Sheldon Silver.
Silver is the corrupt former politician who, as the speaker of the New York State Assembly, repeatedly blocked legislation that would have legalized MMA in the state. What was more galling is that the votes were there, in both the state assembly and the state senate, for many years before it finally passed after Silver was indicted and removed from his position.
It was one person, who was convicted of kickback schemes that benefitted him by millions of dollars. He was convicted in 2015, given a new trial and convicted again in 2018. He was sentenced to six years, and was due for release in 2026.

Good information. New York was hard to get sanctioned and I use to wonder why once UFC made it wrestling based rules and limited striking ways why New York was taking so long. Figures, he was just a corrupt politician.

Many of the responses here are extremely cringe-worthy.

First of all, the "whuddabout Giuliani" crowd needs to stop. Whataboutisms are never good, in general, but you're presuming to read people's minds regarding Giuliani, as the people who dislike Silver might dislike Giuliani as well. But, let's be clear, Silver is a convicted criminal. Giuliani, thus far, isn't.

Second, it's really idiotic to be angry at Dana for expressing frustration that a man can't serve a measly six year sentence when he lied, cheated, and stole from voters. There is a reason Silver was in jail. Dana is a dick, but he's not the bad guy in this situation.
