How important was it from not just a technical stand point but a mental and psychological stand point that he knew Kyokushin Karate. I aske because despite his wrestling, he seemed to take immense pride in his Kyokushin karate.

A lot of the best fighters aren’t just supremely talented but seem to have complete emotional control. They don’t turn it on because they are scared or get pumped up. They turn it on because it makes sense.

Silva, Fedor, Khabib, GSP, DJ. These guys are all in complete control of their emotions. They are confident. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone. And they know how to execute.

To answer your question, yes, it absolutely did.

GSP said many times that the karate footwork is what he used to set up his double leg, and his double leg was obviously a key component to his success. Not only that, but GSP's kicks are very much those of a karateka, and he kicked a lot. Ask Hughes about his kicks.

It was cool to see GSP use these step in side kicks against bisping:

*edit* just realized you're asking about it from a mental perspective. Karate was His first martial art and it's what built his confidence and lead him to mixed martial arts. He wouldn't be where he is today if he didn't find karate.

Maybe helped with his athleticism. He also had a few tools no one used when he started.

Now stop obsessing over TMA. Karate kid is fake

Huge...classical traditional martial arts teach discipline, respect and a depth of understanding in biomechanics that other styles dont ...and theres alot of mental confidence that comes from repetitive training that karate/ TMA instills in people..

That same discipline GSP took and applied to every other style he undertook ..

Its. Huge part of the fighter GSP make up...

You use the two instances he used kicks against senior citizens. Truth is that he was terrified to kick or throw a hook or even a straight for the majority of his career post serra ko. He was a dynamic fighter before he got sent to the morgue by a LW journeyman in his very first title defense. The idea that he was some sort of machida or wonder boy karate guy is absolutely absurd.

GSP’s focus on being proficient in multiple disciplines of fighting is what lead to his winning ways. More so than just his Karate background.

He was ahead of his time with the way he trained with the absolute best in every single discipline.

Now it’s normal but back then not many fighters if any were doing it that way.

GSP would travel the world to train with the best. Legendary!

That's not true. He was throwing kicks all night against hendricks and others after the serra fight

He simply started kicking lass often because he was typically facing some of the best grapplers his division had seen in Shields, Kosheck, fitch, etc etc.

Not even going to address him not throwing straights since that's obviously not true.

Gsp did not do kyokushin. That’s just a watered down version of real kickboxing. So it’s worse than kickboxing in every way and doesn’t give any advantages like unique footwork.

Gsp did shaolin karate. That is the way of the swiveling fist. It has unique footwork such as you saw in koing people in and out, and also gsp with takedowns in and out.

He learned to tap from Jiu jitsu. Theres no tapping in karate. He would’ve fought BJ to the death, but BJ being a BJJ guy quit on the stool. Therefor yes, his karate made him mentally strong.

That head kick he landed on Hughes to win the belt was a culmination of all the Karate drills and mma training. So yes son, it did pay off to dress in pajamas and scream in the mirror.

Says the guy named BJpenngoat lololol. Im sure your opinion is objective and unbiased. I’ll listen to what GSP says about it over you.

You always post like you are high.
Shaolin is Chinese.
Karate is Japanese.
Maybe you were trying to say Shaolin Kung Fu, but would also be wrong, since George did not study that

It was his introduction in the MMA world and with what he first learned to fight, so yeah. It was crucial.
