Burns Vs Woodley really shows how good Maia's grappling is

Burns and Woodley both avoided grappling with Maia like he had Covid. So did Colby and Usman. The only one to engage him on the ground was Ben Askren and we saw how that ended.

I was just referring to his recent opponents. Shields winning a ground fight with Maia is an immense feather in his cap. That said, I would call Maia the more successful MMA grappler overall, as Shields has been soundly out-grappled by Lombard and Fitch, saved by the bell against Mayhem, and subbed by Paul Harris, albeit in a dirty fight.

Jake Shields grappled with Maia for 25 minutes and won.

A controversial decision where Maia had more takedowns and the more dangerous positions in the grappling, and it was split decision that Shields only won because he won round 5 which was all striking. in the rounds where they actually hit the mat they were 2-2, but yeah, shields did engage with Maia on the ground and held his own. shields is a beast.

Burns did a great job last night - but it did make me appreciate the power of Maia's grappling (based on the Burns Vs Maia fight). Did anyone else feel the same way?

It didn't, but that's because I've always known how good Maia was. His grappling is something special and we probably won't see another BJJ guy with his skillset and approach to MMA ever again. Maia is retiring soon, too, so enjoy him while you can.

Shields resume is often overlooked on Sherdog, dude has wins over the likes of Okami, Condit, Daley, Lawler, Miller, Henderson, Woodley, Kampmann, and Maia.

Agreed. I just find it short sighted when people use that shields fight as a knock on Maia when the grappling was actually even in the rounds that had grappling. Especially when you consider that it was Jake fucking shields, who he himself was one of the other greatest grappler specialists in MMA.

Maia's grappling is on a hype pedestal. He doesn't do as much as everyone gloats on and on. Good at holding on to a back and moving like a sloth towards a RNC. Not much variety.

Maia pretty much did what he wanted with Fitch. Then he met Shields and lost a ground battle.

So of course few years later Fitch lays an absolute grapple smackdown on the ass of Shields. Thats just how things work in mma.

He's god everywhere - but amazing in certain positions - that's just how grappling works. No one is great everywhere...

Shields is grappling Primus later on tonight. Should be a good ‘un

Except when Shields outgrappled Maia for an entire fight minus a minute or 2..... lol

Was anybody saying that Maia wasn't one of the best grapplers to compete in MMA?

Jake Shields is a pretty good grappler.

Also beat prime Woodley in a kickboxing match.

Charles is faster than him and has much more variety with that speed. He should be much more efficient being that's all he does.

Half of those wins are highly controversial, particularly vs Okami and Kampann, but also Maia and Woodley.
Great fighter indeed but I'd not say he is overlooked. If anything he tends to be a bit overrated by people who rate him looking at the great names in his win column rather than watching the actual fights, where he didn't look like the superior fighter, as in the aforementioned
