What's wrong with him doing sumo? It's a good way to train explosiveness.

Sumo is actually great for core strength, their appearances notwithstanding . Some of their training is great, like the torso tilts, for which you alternate leaning to one side with the opposite side leg lifted to be parallel to the ground, ideally affecting a T form perpendicular to the floor. Try doing that, slowly, 100 times.
 
I could never understand sumo and the fascination the Japanese have for it.

The rare hugely fat Japanese pushing each other outside of a circle or throwing each other down? There has to be something I'm missing.

look for guys like Asashoryu or Hakuho
those are monsters
