He came to the UFC too late in his career.....too much wrestling mileage on his body, and not fighting enough top tier fighters before he came over. 5-6 years earlier, he would have been a dominant champion. His pure wrestling is still better than 95% of these guys anyway.

Go ahead and pretend he's a can if it helps you sleep at night, but at least he didn't "catch colitis" when the killers came his way.

I don't think he would have beat Hendricks or GSP. Other than those two I think he would have done really well. Perhaps even champion after GSP retired. Never ducked a hard fight and took risks most other fighters wouldn't have (Maia).

He oversimplified his entry.

Just waist bend + walk down.

Should've mask his penetration step via jab/hand fighting & not always chase bodylocks IMO.

But he's not type of guy who uses momentum to put ya on your ass, rather pure skill and chains off of clinch.

Pro fighters for years and still no striking at all. Not even basics. Id say its lack of skill

His entry was strategic. He didn't want to have to come off his knees on his takedowns.

Both. He arrived at the wrong time when he skill wasn't enough.

We never saw Prime Askren in the UFC. Mostly because he trashed talked his way out of a UFC contract during his prime years.

Yes true. But we can also think maybe that he didn't have incentive to train his striking once he was denied his opportunity at the UFC. His wrestling was killing the cans. Maybe his striking would have got better or he would have focused on it more if he came to the UFC and lost early on or whatever.

He's not a can, but prime Askren still struggles against fighters who can wrestle. See the Jay Heiron fight. The wrestleboxers of welterweight were nightmare matchups for him.

ROFL. He wouldnt be shit. GSP would beat any version of Askren with ease, as would have Hendricks.

Maybe, maybe he could avoid getting KO'ed by Silva and lay on him for 25 minutes but I assume Silva would have sent him to another planet with a knee as well.

Weidman would have violated him

I agree he wouldn't have beat GSP or Hendricks. But USADA killed Hendricks and GSP retired. Very well possible he could have been champ. We'll never know. We missed the real Lawler-Askren fight in their primes.
