I think hand toughness of bones is just as much a trait now as "chin".

Think about it, especially with bare knuckle stuff. People can always complain that they broke their hands but tough luck. Protecting your own self is just as much a skill and positive trait as avoiding getting hit or having a good chin. If you have brittle hands be careful with your punches or avoid 100% strength punches.
 
Injuries that are sustained in the fight count as injuries inflicted by the other fighter, in my book.
So yeah, broken hands are no excuse.
 
Legs are the easiest thing to land on with power and spraying and praying.
 
If you're even sparring full contact you should be doing hand and neck strengthening exercises regularly.


It doesn't guarantee anything though.

Old timey martial artists used to toughen their hands. Start as a child punching and knife striking into a pail of rice, then eventually a pail of sand, hammer fisting cinder blocks etc. Combined with Wolff's law of bone remodeling you can have hands of stone
