Has been slept on.

Being away for 1-2 years is considered a long time in this sport but 4 years, that's just crazy.

A lot of people seem to overlook the long hiatus because he beat Bisping but If we go back in time to the months leading to that fight most people were wondering how GSP would look after being away for so long.

Some were questionning whether GSP would be able to eat big shots after that time off because getting hit in the head in the octogon is completely different than in training. The odds for the fight were 50/50.

Stepping away for 4 years, coming back, moving up a weight class and finishing the champ is unheard of.

A lot can be said about Bisping being a weak champ but there is no denying that he was legit top 10 MW and on a winning streak at the time.

Finishing anyone in the top 10 in a weight class above after being out of the competition for so long is nothing short of impressive.

As impressive as any title win I've watched.

He is one of the greatest ever. Anyone who disputes that is a complete retard

The one true GOAT. Anderson and Jones would never take 4 years off then go finish the champ in a weight class above. GSP bless us all.

Not impressed. It was bisping.
Bisping isn't an easy fight for anybody.

The fact that you don't find it impressive just goes to show how great GSP is. Even after 4 years off and being undersized you still expect him to win.

Explain to me how a 15 min fight or less inside an Octogan (like the one in your gym) in a year make any difference, as long as you still training as hard you should be fine

the same bisping that knocked out luke rockhold. what chances would u give gsp against rockhold? slim to none

And the same Bisping who was on a 5 fight win streak that included a win over Anderson Silva and imo was at the peak of his career.

Just idiots talking out their ass, nothing really surprising here.

Im sure hed have had several hard sparring sessions in that time. Also like Jim Lahey is the liquor, Georges is da martial art. Its his life. Hell be a competive dude to fight anyone of similar size well into his twilight years, not even considering da ol' men strent.

I did too. Mike was a good fighter and solid but GSP is truly elite.

He’ll be surpassed but as of now, there’s never been a fighter with a better legacy.

GOAT

Save your energy. The hate some hold for GSP is like Thanos with all stones. It cannot be battled. I think it’s some mixture of their own insecurity and hidden homosexual attraction towards him. Just accept it.

Was a great win

Def looked like a fighter who hadn't fought in 4 years conditioning wise
He knew he needed a finish

40 year old Anderson and 50 year old Hendo lol

If Whittaker remains injured or unable to compete for the next half-year or so I'd like to see GSP come out of retirement to challenge Izzy for the belt. Try to prove it wasn't a one-time occurrence.

Wow!

Vitali Klitschko done this shit already

Hell fucking even a past it Tyson came out of prison and walked his way into a title.I doubt he was able to keep sparring in there.

Don't forget Ali was exiled for three years and came back to beat Quarry who was a world class heavy

Jones could likely sit out five years snorting coke and still come back and beat a Bisping level fighter.

GSP is one of the best ever, but he's seriously overrated by some

You don't spar at the same intensity as you fight -- at least you shouldn't if you care about concussions and neurological damage. And that affects your timing and your reactions to full out combat. And with very few exceptions, you don't train as intensely when you're not actively competing, because you lack the motivation of an upcoming fight.

This is true for just about every sport. Players in just about any sport who come back from extended time off (often because of injury, but sometimes because of a suspension) need several games or even weeks to get back up to speed. In team sports this doesn't matter so much, they just have shorter shifts.

Crosby took a year off because of a concussion, and his first couple of weeks back looked bad -- he was in shape but his timing was off. The Penguins simply limited his ice time until he regained his timing, and a few months later he was completely back in his game. Michael Jordan's first game after his baseball retirement didn't look great either, but again his timing came back after a couple of games.

But both of those were only one year off. Jordan's performance after his second, three year retirement never matched his play before retirement. He was in shape, but he never regained the timing and coordination.

In any case, GSP looked slow and out of shape against Bisping. He was tired after the first round (and when before his retirement did he ever look tired even after five rounds?), his timing on takedowns was off, and his coordination looked bad. Post retirement GSP would have lost badly to pre-retirement GSP.

As the great Chael has said

"All the critiques were right, they said Georges St-Pierre wouldn't be as fast as he used to be, he wasnt.

They said Georges St-Pierre wouldn't be able to wrestle like he used to, he didn't.

They said Georges St-Pierre would give up muscle against Bisping, he did.

What everybody learned is the gap between Georges St-Pierre as a mixed martial artist and the rest of the world is too big for anyone to close. That is the greatest fighter that we have ever seen. We knew that 4 years ago but people have short term memories. They were reminded of that tonight"
