Why doesn’t someone like Darren Till see all these little guys who moved up in weight and had successful runs? Why does he mutilate himself to actually be at a disadvantage. Clearly there is a law of diminishing returns on weight cutting where at a certain point, having a size advantage is superseded by a diminished chin, cardio, and just overall performance.

After all the recent events and fighters moving up and down, it is evident that moving up in weight is a much better idea vs. moving down.

We have seen TJ Dillashaw cut a lot of weight only to get knocked out by a flyweight who doesn’t knock anyone out. Then we see someone like Cormier move up and destroy the HW UFC GOAT. Anthony Johnson couldn’t beat Josh Koscheck at Welterweight, but he can beat Ryan Bader and Gus at LHW.

With that said, there are still a ton of guys who fight in a weight class they are too big for and suffer because of it.

Not all of them are tough enough to move up and down. They'd rather have an advantage on smaller men. A real CHAMP moves up in weight classes, KOing people left and right.

Not everyone is brave like Conor

Khabib at 170 gets smash he needs to cut big to have that side advantage it’s how he wins

Well lets wait and see how former HW Jared Cannonier does against Anderson in May. Beating branch at MW was better than getting stopped by Shawn Jordan at HW.
There are plenty of fat HWs who would benefit from getting in shape and dropping down. Justing Willis is a 6'1" 265lb fighter who could definitely drop down and not get manhandled by real HWs like Blaydes.

DC was the bigger man at
Heavyweight

For some guys like him and Rumble at WW for example it played a huge advantage, for some guys going up in weight the power doesn't carry over or slows em down.

I remember Matt Hughes's "disrespect" issue (I guess they needed the manufactured drama) with BJ moving up in weight to challenge Matt for the WW championship. Apparently in the wrestling world it is disrespectful for someone to move up in weight to challenge someone -- it's only acceptable to suck weight and go down a class for a challenge. Whatev. BJ made him tap out.

Vision Quest:. Movie based on wrestling where hero goes DOWN in weight (lol) to Challenge the badaass, Shoot.

All of this depends on the fighter. We will have different period of results going both ways. As of late, the lighter fighter have come up and have been winning and winning titles. This trend won't hold- it'll continue to have different results which is actually great for the sport.

We can now look back in hindsight and give Mousasi the proper props for absolutely wrecking the huge and highly ranked welter (think gegard had , what 8-9 pounds on him? ) rory Macdonald. This a perfect time to bring up after what we've been seeing for awhile now. It was an extremely lopsided super fight that lasted a round and change where we saw a guy like rory tap to strikes at the hands of gegards nasty top game ( official result was tko only cause ref didnt see rory tapping cause he was diving in to save him from further punishment)

Who is Mousasi?

I'm inclined to agree with TS, but I suspect that it's probably more complicated than it may appear. Guys naturally get heavier with age and presumably become better fighters with time and experience. Ceronne had initial success after moving to WW, but decided to move back to LW after a 1-4 stretch. Perhaps climbing the ladder in competition is a factor, too. I'd prefer to see a more comprehensive collection of data.
