WB was marking Pettis’s face up pretty good. He didn’t make any mistake, just didn’t account for the sling shot effect of the fence.

After fighting your opponent for a while, you calibrate his speed and explosiveness to anticipate his movement. If it was wide in the open, Pettis would have never had that kind of explosiveness without the rubber band effect of the fence. WB kicked him into the fence and the fence slings him back a lot quicker than expected. No one could have anticipated it. Pettis got lucky.

What he didn’t do was have his left hand up blocking his face

Well I guess in a way WB should have expected it since Pettis is known for attacking off the fence
Looking at the replay, i didnt see pettis push off the fence. He was near it but he pushed off the floor.

Pettis didn't kick off the fence

Thompson literally fights with his hands down the entire fight and doesn’t really have a good chin. Thompson was looking for points, Pettis was looking for the kill.

He pushed off the ground but he was already moving very fast because WB kicked him into the fence and it pushed him back

i thought this was a chad mendes thread

He didn't even touch the fence. His left foot sprung from the canvas.

Naw, saved by a good game plan, heart and a willingness to push threw.

Legkicks, odd body kick, high guard, pressure and crowding and seeing the opening and taking it.

See below how the fence pushes him back after the WB kick. If it was out in the open he would not have been that fast coming back

If it was out in the open, Pettis would have been a few steps back and right in range for another kick. WB did feel the need to have his hands up
