I'm a first degree black belt under Master de la Riva himself. Rather than teach you a sweep, I thought to begin with I'd show you the invisible jiu jitsu behind the position that allows you to hold the de la Riva guard long enough for you to nail your favourite attack :D

That was pretty fantastic. I do have a question though, how do you prefer to play DLR in no gi? Without the sleeve grip I find I'm constantly getting my non DLR hook stripped.

cheers guys. GKY, in nogi i usually play more reverse DLR. But if i play normal i either play wrist grip, or i play with my other foot on the floor.

I've seen another of your instructionals and thought them pretty great. DLR can apply a lot of pressure my Hook Knee and paying attention to position will help alleviate it. Definitely subscribing! Cheers!

What is your opinion on the location of the non de LA riva hook?

I watched a video of de LA,riva demonstrating his guard and did not necessarily block the knee with the non de la riva hook.

In your video, I can see similar theme as your put the foot on the hip! (Not so sure due to angle of the video camera).

I use the other foot to block and push on on the knee straight away. It put my opponent off balance.

Would you just consider it as one of the many sweep from the repertoire of the DLR and not necessarily a must for the foundation of the DLR.
As I notice, it was more important to focus and using the grip sleeves to stretch them out to off balance them instead.

in a nutshell, if i am dominating the sleeve on the same side as my non de la riva hook leg i might use it at the hip, thigh or knee. depending on what i want to do next. if i dont have that sleeve i will almost certainly get leg dragged etc, so i put it on the floor and angle off. This is something i learned direct from master de a riva and not a lot of people are doing it these days. there's also some new tricks regarding the depth of the DLR hook itself that haven't filtered through yet

Putting the non de LA riva hook on the floor and angle off is exactly what shocked me when I saw his video.

How did I ended doing so differently from the person that the guard is named after?

    Mind blow
