I thought there were renters protection laws that kept this kind of thing from happening?

People are dumb for living in SF anyway. You could live in a mansion with maids and bitches to do your bidding for that kinda money. Go live in the east bay for a year and buy a fuckin helicopter and helicopt to the city every day if you have to.

According to jiang Wei from Silicon Valley, he can stay there for a year rent free.

Seems like the landowner is trying to push them out so they can do something else with the property. They probably need all the tenants to leave before they can tear it down due to some sort of tenant law.

There are loopholes to every law. They can kick you out by claiming they need it for themselves to live in. Give you a month or 2 to leave then AirBNB it. You need a lic to AirBnb but I read in another article that only 3 houses in SF are actually registered. I guarantee you that house/room is going to be used for AirBnb.

It's not just the techies that are driving the prices up. It's also things like AirBnb.

They need to crack down on these loophole exploiters. The law only prevents you from rerenting it. They need to make sure you're actually living in it and don't have 2 addresses.

Well, the guy wasn't the original lessee. Someone else was and this guy moved in as a roommate and eventually took over payments, but never signed a rental agreement. Sounds like he's out of luck on this one.

I'm just surprised that rent is that high.

I don't know why anyone would want to live in San Fran anyway.

You could live in San Diego or LA for a lot less and the weather is a lot better. Plus the liberals aren't as annoying and gay.

Because that's where their jobs are? Also, SF pays way more than SD or LA.

But SF is quickly becoming a techie only city. It might be better to take a wage cut and live at somewhere more affordable.

Also, why most city workers are actually living in the Easy Bay.

Sf is full of Prius drivers, hippies , druggies , bums, Flamers. No thanks on wannabe techies with smart phones.

I get that it's all relative, but I'd rather get paid less and live in SoCal.

Holy hell that's pricey. That was my biggest concern moving out here to LA. Didn't want to have to move back home after a year with my tail between my legs, saying I couldn't afford it. Doing dorm style living for now. $550 a month flat.

I'm sharing a bedroom with three other guys (two bunk beds). One's a slob and the place is always dirty. Not somewhere you'd want to bring a girl home to. But I got plenty of money in the bank which buys me time to find something better.

Guess you're a monster truck driving, global warming redneck SOB. But you don't believe in global warming amirite?

It wasn't always this bad. It's only these few years that it's gotten this bad. It used to be better to work in SF. But now I think you're right. Unless you're a techie, it's probably better to live somewhere else.

But a lot of us, including the guy from the article, already have our roots planted here. It's going to be hard to move and find another job.

But yea, if you're new or just starting out, its probably better to go somewhere else. It used to be better to come to the Bay for jobs.

Anyone from the Bay Area that can shine some light on this?

This place is a complete dump (from the pics in the article). The guy in the article needs to quit crying and just move somewhere else already. But the average rent in this part of town is almost $7K/mo? WTF?

This seems more expensive than NYC. Amazing

i live in s.f. prices are astronomical, especially in north beach. it's the tourist-area of the city. if you don't have rent-control, expect to get fucked in the ass with no lube. for folks who can't afford to live in the city, move to the east bay. it's still expensive, but not as expensive. the fact, is that everyone wants to live here, and there is limited housing.

eh, you get what you pay for. it's awesome to live in a city where everything is close, you have amazing views of the bay, all kinds of foods just around the corner, and great nightlife around you. but i can see how it's not for everyone, and it can be hard to justify for some.

The owner is claiming that since this person isn't on the lease, they aren't protected by any existing rental agreement.

What happened was that they moved in as either aa sub-tenant to the original guy or just an under the table, but when the original lease holder left they stayed and the landlord continued to accept rent from them, so I wouldn't be surprised if the court sided with the tenant in the end.

the one great thing about living in a city like san francisco, is that like new york, you don't need a vehicle. a lot of folks, including myself, don't ever have to worry about buying and maintaining a vehicle, pay gas, look for parking, etc. i never have to sit in traffic all day and get stressed out. there are some benefits to living in this city.
