2020 Motorsports thread.

Pretty clear now that Mercedes were bullshitting last week when they said track debris caused their tire issues. Red Bull's strategy was spot on today. Glad to see the race outcomes get a little more interesting.

Another unforced error. I can't think of another driver that has had more unforced errors in the turbo hybrids. He didn't have a chance today but I think his unforced errors cost him 3 wins as well.

Great to see Max get the win. Lewis can't be too unhappy getting P2 with fastest lap furthering his point lead.
I thought he extended it also, but it’s still 30. Just over Max now. Still a bonus. Bottas is his rival for title. But let’s see. Glad lewis was able to finish second. Bottas had to hold up max longer after max’ first stop, he got passed like a back marker. He probably thought holding up max would only benefit Lewis and not him.

Yeah I meant extend his lead over Bottas, who I assume will be the actual title contender at the end. We'll see.

Honestly I just think the redbull had the better set up, Bottas was and Hamilton would have been a sitting duck. Max being on fresh mediums against already blistered hards on the mercs. Bottas got hosed on strategy.

Mercedes had to split the strategy. I think they were hoping Bottas could gain some time but Red Bull covered the stop. Red Bull might have improved the tire wear on the hard tires by running them through heat cycles in practice and qualifying while Mercedes had virgin hard tires in the race. I'm sure Mercedes is looking at that.

Keselowski take out his team mate Blaney trying to pass for the lead with over 70 laps remaining. Blaney tried to squeeze him down so it was partly his fault too.

sweep for harvick at michigan
good racing at the end between him and hamlin

I think they kept Lewis out there a little longer when they saw that he was able to keep the lap times pretty similar to Bottas and max. One would think max could have caught Lewis, but maybe they were also saving the tyres knowing most likely Lewis would stop again and worst case turn it on later if it looked like an unlikely one stopper. I think it played over the radio.
Also, pretty cool vid of Lewis and schumi a first podium and 155 podium. Crazy feat by Lewis.

Another "little" tweak from the FIA. They want to eliminate the ability to select different engine modes in the cars so they have one mode to use in practice, qualifying and the race. This could mean that the teams will have to use their maximum power settings and count on the drivers to take it easy in the race to conserve fuel and the engines.

I wonder if this eliminates any starting modes. Remember when they banned traction control but gave up when they decided that they couldn't tell if it was being used or not?

Mercedes fastest again in practice in Spain With Bottas fastest in the first practice and Hamilton fastest in the second. Verstappen ran 3rd in both sessions, about .8 seconds behind. Vettel has a new car and both Ferraris were quick in the first practice running 4th and 5th but slower in the second practice with Leclerc in 6th behind Ricciardo and Grosjean. Vettel was in 12th.

I was surprised to see Mercedes not making a run on medium tires in Q2. The top 10 cars will start on soft tires so they will all likely make 2 stops for tires.

Interesting Formula 2 race today. Pit stops and safety cars really changed the course of the race.

The Xfinity cars aren't doing well on the road course at Daytona. The road course specialists aren't doing well at all. It rained just as the race was supposed to start so the grass is very wet. If they drop a wheel off, they go for a spin.

I thought someone would at least try. Could always run a soft if looks dicey.

I certainly thought Mercedes would make their first run in Q2 on mediums. I guess the congestion and the risks of a crash shortening the session deterred teams from trying.

Chance of rain in Spain as Hamilton seems to have the race in hand. It might miss the track.

Bottas couldn't catch Verstappen for second. Hamilton lapped everyone except Bottas and Verstappen. I suspect Hamilton was tired of the tire management talk. He said he wasn't even aware that he was on the last lap.
