Red Bull look like morons for pitting Verstappen late after Hamilton lost his tire on the last lap. I guess they were nervous that Max's tires were in similar shape.

Kyle Bush takes an early exit after hitting the wall.

Damn, what an ending at Silverstone! Poor Bottas though. Just a couple laps to go.

I don’t fault Red Bull for pitting. They were playing it safe for a sure thing, instead of gambling that Lewis would blow a tire too. Max pushes his car and hindsight is 20/20. What if Max didn’t pit, pushed a little too hard and also got a puncture or crashed, then there’d be zero points.

Good race and exciting finish!

Red Bull wanted that 1 point for fastest lap (and Max did it), since they couldn't catch Hamilton anyway.

The plan to use one step softer compound tires in this weekends race at Silverstone is being reconsidered. The plan was for the hardest tire to be the one that was the medium tire on Sunday. The medium would be the same compound as the softest tire used Sunday so the soft tire would be even softer and wear even faster. Since teams only get 2 sets of the hardest tire and 3 of the medium, there is some concern that it might not be possible to run a set of medium and a set of hard tires and finish the race. It would certainly make it unlikely that any cars that started on the softest compound would be able to make it to the end on the softest compound.

The first stint on tires was shortened because of the deployment of a safety car made it all but essential to change tires under the safety car. That meant the hard tires had to run longer than planned but there were many caution laps at lower speed. The weather is supposed to be hotter this coming Sunday which is making them rethink the tire choice. The question is, are there enough tires available to change the compounds or the number of each compound they will get. Whatever happens, I suspect there may not be many laps on the track for practice sessions as they will just burn up the softest tires to save the mediums for the second qualifying session and mediums and hard tires for the race.

Pirelli says the tire problems were the result of a longer stint on the hard compound tires coupled with higher race speeds. They are going ahead with the planned softer compound tires for Sundays race and possibly increased air pressures. This almost certainly condemns the teams that have to use the softest tire in the second qualifying session to a two stop race. It might even be an advantage to not make it through Q2 to be able to chose what tires to start on.

It will almost certainly make the teams race very conservatively to avoid tire wear.

It was pretty obvious that the safety car caused teams to change earlier than they wanted. Not sure why they're overthinking it.

Hamilton thinks it was debris that caused his tire to go flat. The debris might have come from Raikkonen's Alfa Romeo which lost part of the left front wing.

Formula One is very reluctant to stop a race for debris and drivers and teams probably wouldn't want them to. Even when a race is under a safety car, debris clean up has been less than ideal relying on track marshals using push brooms. There are fewer track marshals now because of COVID19.

The second guessing on Sunday's race was put in perspective by Red Bull in their statement.
“Right at the end there Max was really getting worried about vibrations,” explained Red Bull boss Christian Horner. “We saw Bottas’s puncture and we could see we had a big groove in our tyre, so we elected to pit and put the soft on and try and get the point for the [fastest] lap as well.”

Verstappen did bag that fastest lap AND second place, so you could say the decision paid off – especially as Red Bull found about 50 cuts in the tyres they removed.

It seems that the tire problems might have been more from debris than wear.

Meanwhile, no word from the hearing on Renault's protest of the Racing Point brake ducts that was scheduled to take place 11 hours ago.

It very well could have been debris, but three front left tyre failures makes me think it was the tire wear. Who knows. This weekend could be interesting.

Looks like Bottas is signed to another year with Merc.

George Russell is like, "another year with Williams...."

All of those tires ran over the same section of the track. Pirelli is also claiming that the tire that went flat and sent Kyvat into the wall was caused by the bead overheating on the 12th lap on the medium tire with several safety car laps during those 12.

True.
Bottas was complaining of vision problems from the vibration though. Who knows. I don’t mind a two stop race. Let’s see what happens. Three races in consecutive weeks is amazing.

Racing point fined and docked points. But can keep the changes for rest of season from what I gather.

Bottas fastest in fp1.

Vettel just blew up something spewing fluid with a few minutes left in practice 2. Ferrari says engine failure.

It was difficult to keep track of who was using how many sets of tires. Here's a chart showing stints on tires but it doesn't show if they were new or used tires.

Lewis was fastest in P2 on the medium tires. He started the session on soft tires setting fastest lap and Bottas on medium. Then Bottas came out on soft tires and went faster. Hamilton then came out on medium tires and set the fastest lap. Bottas switched to medium tires but it wasn't clear if he used a second set of mediums or the used ones from his first stint.

The Renauts ran some laps on the hard tires but they might have been putting a lap or two on them to scuff them to try to harden the rubber. The teams only have two sets of hard tires and most will save them for the race.

It seems like teams would want to have two of the three allotted sets of mediums going into qualifying. They would use one set in Q2 and one to start the race. I suppose they could get by with one set and avoid being in the top ten so they could start on the medium tires.

Leclerc didn't get many laps on the soft tire before his right rear started graining. It will almost certainly be a two stop race if they start on medium tires and possibly 3 stops if they start on soft tires.

The tire rules state;
The schedule states that one set has to be given back after the first 40 minutes of the first practice, another set at the end of the first practice, two sets at the end of the second practice and another two sets at the end of the third practice.

So after practice, the teams will have 7 of the alloted 13 sets of tires left to make it through qualifying and the race. They will likely use at least 2 sets in qualifying and possibly 3 or 4. If they use 4 to get into the top 10, it leaves only 3 sets of new tires for the race so anything beyond 2 stops would be used tires.

With 8 sets of the soft tire, and the soft tire seeming to be almost useless in the race, The first 4 sets I would give back this weekend would be the soft tires and probably the first 6 sets. That leaves 2 sets of soft tires, 3 sets of mediums and 2 of the hard tires. One of the mediums might be scuffed tires and Mercedes might even be able to get by with those to get through Q2. Other teams might need new mediums or even soft tires to get through Q2.

Some teams might save a set of soft tires to try to set the fastest lap at the end of the race to grab a point.
