Hey guys!

Recently I've been experimenting with 2 on 1s from the guard (mostly closed and half/knee shield) with interesting results, but I'm having trouble getting the money move with them: getting the other guy's arm across, so I can get to the back (similar to what Roger Gracie does in the video below).

My main problem is I have trouble getting the arm across. Yanking it only works on noobs (and I'm not that strong anyway), so I'm looking for a combo where I can use the guy's reaction against him.

Anybody here have an idea of something to threaten the guy with which will give me the reaction I want?

A crunching motion with your legs pulling them down and forward often works well to cause them to lose balance for the 2-1 pull through. If they don't have a super tight grip on the lapel, if you time it right you can pull the arm through after the crunch (as that falling motion will cause them to let off weight to rebalance) and slide your knee up, foot on the hip and trap the shoulder (for pendulum sweep or armbar/triangle series) or pull it deeper across and hip out to set up the back take.

The key to making this work (and it's a huge part of my closed guard game) is that you're not really draggin their arm across your body so much as using your 2-1 grip to hip out to the side and pulling uke straight forward. There are a ton of entries for this position (shameless plug: my coach, an expert in this position, has a video series on the side guard here: https://shop.platformpurple.com/product/?shop=1238&product=16018 ), my personal favrotie is actually to use a cross collar grip and block the elbow with my free hand while collar dragging and hipping out. But in any case, the key is not to try and actively drag his arm across your body, but rather move yourself around his arm while breaking his posture directly forward.

This.

Uchi Mata- Do you have Liera's instructionals? Does Busy's Instructional cover material for the set up and reactions that aren't covered in other instructionals?

Caio Terra shows a bunch of cool stuff on 2 on 1 stuff from closed guard on his website.
He also did a online webinar on it (which they unfortunately didn't record).
He has recently put out some reverse de la riva 2 on 1 which I'll watch one I'm again subscribed.

I've never seen Liera's stuff. I guarantee you Busy's has stuff that other DVDs don't have, he's spent his whole life working on this position and he has a ton of setups I've never seen anyone show. That said, a lot of it's pretty situation specific, I personally only use 2-3 of the probably 15 setups he's shown me on a regular basis.
