That sounds like a terrorist act to me.

They should have charged them with some really heavy shit, but looks like the idiotic deportation policy got in the way or someone doesn't know what they're doing.

US arrests another Chinese scientist for allegedly smuggling biological material

Scientist accused months ago of shipping material, described as related to worms, to University of Michigan lab

A Chinese scientist was arrested while arriving in the US at the Detroit airport, the second case in days involving the alleged smuggling of biological material, authorities said on Monday.

The scientist is accused of shipping biological material months ago to staff at a laboratory at the University of Michigan. The FBI, in a court filing, described it as material related to certain worms and requires a government permit.

“The guidelines for importing biological materials into the US for research purposes are stringent, but clear, and actions like this undermine the legitimate work of other visiting scholars,” said John Nowak, who leads field operations at US Customs and Border Protection.

The scientist was interviewed and arrested on Sunday after arriving on a flight from China, where she is pursuing an advanced degree at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan. She planned to spend a year completing a project at the University of Michigan.

Her shipments, including an envelope stuffed inside a book, were intercepted last year and earlier this year and opened by authorities, the FBI said.

The court filing doesn’t indicate whether the FBI believes the biological material was risky, though US attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr said smuggling “threatens our security”.

The scientist remains in custody awaiting a bond hearing on Wednesday.

“It doesn’t strike me as something that is dangerous in any way. But there are rules to ship biological material,” said Michael Shapira, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who read the court filing and spoke to the Associated Press.

The government last week charged two Chinese scientists who are accused of conspiring to smuggle a toxic fungus into the US. One was turned around at the Detroit airport and sent back to China last year, while the other, a researcher at the University of Michigan, was arrested. She remains in custody.

Weren't there some Sherdoggers last week upset with Trump because he was being unfair to Chinese people? Like these people are some sort of asset to us and not actively trying to work against our interests?

60 Minutes did a story about Chinese spies at American universities two weeks ago.

The crux of the story was that many international students are being spied upon so that they don't become "Americanized".

A few years ago, there was a block party BBQ in our neighborhood. Our town is a college town. One woman I talked with is from China and worked at the university. When I asked what she did, she said she worked in the patent office of the university. In fact, she straight up told me how it's the college of agriculture that produces the most patents each year.

I foud that interesting

Oh more than that, their threatened and told if you don't tow the line,.do as you're told, it's your family back home that will suffer if you think your going to escape!!

They've got a huge network and loads of umbrella companies operating shell companies.

it is and it's not. a lot of the shit you hear are exaggerated anti-china propaganda that's pushed by falun gong and cia through anti-chinese content from channels like china uncensored and china observer etc. these are propaganda content. there are truth to it but they are exaggerated. i forgot how many "china is gonna collapse in the next week" video i have watched on youtube in the last 4 year.

some of the problems definitely real though, not as severe as they make it out to be but it's there

Yes I agree, but China has one of the most over reaching ability to control it's citizens, both domestically and abroad......

oh definitely i lived half my life in shanghai. you see cameras in every corner. there's one right at the entrance of every apartment building. there are facial recognitions to identify anyone. you go through body checks just to get on subway. your internet history is being monitered. any internet comment deemed harmful to the regime gets removed immediately. you have no access to google, youtube, any other western social medias
the level and the sophistication of control is unprecedented in history. it makes the dystopian world described in1984 look like a joke in comparison.

And the sad and scary thing is, there's governments in the west that look on in envy........

back in my naive days i had hope of better life for everyone
I thought China is gonna become more like the US over the years
sadly reality never disappoint. US has became more like China

Yeap....... It certainly looks to be the long term drawn out goal ......death by a thousand cuts......hands tied behind your back ......

War with China is inevitable if the US decouples economically, which we are in the midst of. China is accused of a lot of nefarious shit that they may well be guilty of. It’s important to remember Xi and the party are communist in name only. Look at his history of living through Mao. The party is authoritarian and do not believe in the same worker rights we do. The truth is, you’re fucked either way. You either ship your manufacturing to them and enjoy cheaper goods (borderline slave labor always wins in comparative advantage) or you domesticate manufacturing and pay more for the standards we demand here stateside. Thing is, economists already figured this out back in the 80s and made the choice for you. The past thirty years has been corporate America cutting away at the margin of disposable income families had from cheaper goods. They knew the cheaper goods meant more money they can take from you in the form of egregious taxes and such. Both sides did it, they both are accountable. It’s not partisan at all.

China will do China just like the US has done the US. We are a country that acts like we didn’t ram a bunch of boats up a countries ass for “trade deals” or didn’t demand the majority of a certain countries oil sales. It’s a Cold War and the US is losing because we don’t have the authoritarianism of the CCP. The 1% LOVE the model.

China has a history of doing this and stealing technology an data but the left says Russia is the biggest threat.

1) Biggest american companies set shop / outsourced their production to China because of cheaper production costs; Apple, Tesla, Nike, Boeing, Microsoft, General Motors, etc. > China didn't even have to steal shit, YOUR companies gave them all the tech/tools/knowledge they needed to succeed
want to know more? watch:

2) Tech theft/hacking is a global problem, not just China problem - Russia, Iran, Isreal, North Korea, USA (and many more) have been caught in industrial espionage and cyberops

3) US is such a bitch ass country that you ban anyone that is about to endager your n1 position - case in point, Japan and China:
The US has sought to restrict Japanese exports and open the Japanese market to increase US exports. These tensions, particularly in the 1970s and 1990s, were often fueled by rising Japanese market penetration and trade deficits.
The US has imposed several restrictions on Huawei, including a ban on its equipment in federal networks, a ban on exports to the company, and a ban on the use of Huawei's Ascend AI chips worldwide.

Yes, Russia is the biggest threat because it threatened multiple times to NUKE US allies and NATO itself + its funding North Korean regime that launched several missiles towards US. As far as I know, China hasn't used its military outside of its borders in forever.
