For those who don't know this is the granddaddy GOTY awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences; the votes are restricted to professional members within the gaming industry. It is the equivalent of the Academy Awards for film, the Emmy's for television, or the Grammy's for music. This is the big one. The other GOTY awards I personally observe: Game Developer's Choice Awards, Giant Bomb's Games of the Year, and Metacritic's End of the Year "Best Of" Roundup. We also usually hold a Sherdog poll.

Well, obviously we got a big upset. The heavy favorite was clearly The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I personally though Bloodborne, and then Rise of the Tomb Raider (which received the most nominations of any game) followed in the respective strengths of their berths. So, yeah, Bethesda was a big winner. They also pulled out the Mobile GOTY with Fallout Shelter.

Perhaps the most odd thing one might notice about the awards, since the DICE is usually one of the only awards ceremonies that is logically consistent, is that Metal Gear V: Phantom Pain won the Adventure GOTY award over Ori and the Blind Forest and Rise of the Tomb Raider despite that both of the latter were nominated for GOTY while Metal Gear V was not. Rare slip for them. It's even odder considering how many nominations & wins these other two games pulled while MGV only pulled the single nomination and win.

Yet I doubt either of them was as disappointed as the night's biggest "loser", Square Enix, whose Rise of the Tomb Raider led this year in total nominations with 9, and who had three other games garnering nominations. Between Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft GO, Life is Strange, and Just Cause 3 they had 17 nominations and a chance at 12 total wins, but came up with just one (for Lara Croft's characterization in Rise of the Tomb Raider). Leading in nominations by such a steep margin turned out to be something of a bittersweet pill.

I know a lot of people will be unhappy, but I'm just stoked that Rocket League got the accolades it deserved. EA with FIFA 2K and NBA 2K put out some of their strongest editions in years, and Rocket League smoked them. The "Sprite" award is also basically the biggest award that an Indie developer can win (since small games never really stand a chance in the main GOTY category). It's sort of the Indie GOTY from DICE with an emphasis on pushing new ideas & formats into gaming. Finally it scored the Best Online game! Damn. Those are three huge awards. Brings a tear to my eye.

You have to hand it to Rocket League. It's been quite a while since we had an original competitive sports(?) game, that took the world by storm. I think it might have the same impact that Mario Kart, or Tony Hawk had on the industry. The clones are a comin' I'm sure, but that's okay. It's just nice to have something completely different from the shooters, and pro sports games to compete with your friends in.

No egregious omissions or wins. My personal list would look different but one of the hardest things for me is making sure games I enjoy are up for nomination due to being early access/beta and not landing in the correct year.

I would say posters like Cygnus should offer their opinions instead of just disagreeing.

I just can't see how you pick fallout over the other games. The gun play was better, but the dialog compared to the other games (in the fallout series) was terrible. What made Fallout stand out from the other games nominated?

Witcher 3 would of been my pick, pillars was another one I'd choose.

Wild Hunt honestly should take most of those from Fallout.

Good to see Rocket League getting well deserved praise.

Even with games like Fallout 4 out i'd still find time to get a few games of RL in. One always turned into two, turned into 10. Such a fun game.

Fallout should definitely NOT have won. The graphics are severely dated. It didn't stay true to the RPG of the series. As a FPS, it is "meh". The story is not engaging. . I could go on, but you get the point. It still has a 5.4/10 rating on metacritic.

The thing that gets to me is that so many GOTY worthy games are 100+ hour investments.
I highly doubt the voters put 100-150 hours into fallout and witcher3 and metal gear and whatever else.

A lot of times it feels like everyone plays a game or two they lobbies for what they preferred out of what they played.

Eh, metacritic isn't a great source for what's good or bad by ratings

Fallout was fun but I enjoyed pillars, blood, and Witcher more

He's talking about the MC User Rating, Austin.

Yeah, the Metacritic User rating is awful, Cygnus. We still just don't have a reliable IMDb for gaming where we can get a definite people's rating by the gamers of the world. In fact, IMDb is currently the best. On IMDb they don't count votes towards the official rating unless someone regularly votes and has a verified account. Metacritic is plagued by bots and trolls. For example, the Metacritic rating is bad, okay. Meanwhile, IMDb, with 2,591 votes gathered, sees an average 9.4 rating for Fallout 4:
    www.imdb.com/title/tt4741306/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Obviously this degree of mathematical discrepancy on a scale this large (for both sites) is impossible without some kind of tampering. Generally speaking I don't even like IMDb because while the scores on Metacritic User are artificially deflated (or inflated) it seems to me that on IMDb they are organically inflated: meaning that I think only the people who are more likely to be hardcore fans for a game end up wandering into an IMDb video game page and voting. Or it could be the IMDb community represents a more casual VG fanbase that doesn't reflect as accurately a more dedicated fanbase. I suppose I should mention that The Witcher 3 scored a 9.8 on IMDb (Bloodborne scores a 9.3).

Oh, it occurred to me why the Metal Gear Solid V win makes sense. It's a classic split vote. The nominations themselves weren't illogical (for example, we didn't see a game get nominated for Game of the Year, then fail to get nominated in its own lesser subgenre for Action Game of the Year...stuff like this happens all the time at shitshows like the Spike Awards). After the nomination process it's out of the Academy's hands, and it's up to their voters. So Rise of the Tomb Raider probably split the vote with Ori and the Blind Forest leaving Metal Gear V to scoop up a plurality it never would have won against either of them alone.

I'm stoked everyone else is stoked for Rocket League. I'm still a little sore that it didn't get a GOTY nomination in the main category, but the fact it walked away from the ceremony with as many wins as any other single games softens the blow. Pretty badass such a modest game, relatively speaking-- one that was freaking FREE on PS+-- could do this well at the year's biggest ceremony.

How does the forum feel about Star Wars Battlefront beating Destiny: The Taken King for Action GOTY? I was a hardcore Destiny player who ducked out before the expansion, but I've heard almost nothing but good things about it.

I could see Fallout beating W3 based on pure gameplay, but if that's the case - than there is no way Bloodborne, Rocket League or MGS V shouldn't have gotten the nod.

Skyrim winning the award for story - and now this - have me seriously questioning these awards now.

Going by people i've talked to and what i read, i feel Splatoon should of won. Destiny was a very overhyped game for me, Star wars got the graphics right but the gameplay was lacking, and i just keep hearing good things about splatoon (only played destiny and beta of star wars.fyi)
