17 Tips On Training Without An Instructor or Even With One.
Author: Jason Scully

For some people they have the perfect situation. They are trained by a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a former Muay Thai competitor, former collegiate wrestler or judo champions are teaching them takedowns and they have the time to train outside of class.

For others that

I have to disagree with this notion, but hey wtf do I know.

These are all great tips for any grappler... Worthy of putting in the FAQ somehow.

training without a teacher I think.

Yup, never a good idea.

I do it with a friend who is also very adament about jits... but this was only in between schools, when we couldn't really train without an instructor

lol d000d i got metrowned

You're not too bright are you?

Great read. People debating whether it's a good idea to train without an instructor mistook what this entire thread was about. The TS meant this to be a guide to those who don't have an instructor with them at that moment or can't afford one to begin with. Sure it isn't as good as training with Renzo Gracie, but the fact is that any training will help to a certain degree. (assuming you're doing the techniques properly, but you could say that even with an instructor) The TS never said "screw getting instruction, do this yourself". :icon_chee

Actually I think it's a great read even for those who do goto a regular school with an instructor.

You didn't read my 2 other posts in this thread saying the same thing that you're berating me about, did you?

Yes, the intent of the article is for those who do not have the option to train with an instructor, but also as the title says "or Even With One". Many if not all of these tips can and probably should be utilized even if you do have an instructor.

It is meant as a way to encourage those who are unfortunate to not have a readily available grappling mentor/instructor and for them to keep training if they really enjoy the sport.

Thanks for all of the nice feedback
Jason

Those are good tips for any grappler, ignore the hate.

As someone who was/is in that exact situation I have to agree with you 100% with everything you wrote Jaysculls.

Trained under Roberto Traven for a year and when he had to leave Australia it was either keep the club going myself(blue belt) or can it. Bought the mats and haven't looked back, I've trained 2 blue belts from scratch who both nominated and competed at the nationals and have a class of between 5 to 10 people all doing well. In fact in comp I think our club has consistantly performed as well if not better than the others in Queensland

Don't get me wrong if Trav was still here they would have won down there but there is no reason you can't train yourself as long as you have likeminded training partners.
Buy the best dvds you can and research moves.
And

I also had the good fortune to train under someone like Trav and just copied his teaching style and class intensity.

To idiot who dissagreed with the TS perhaps not all of us have the oppotunity others have and have to make do with what we have. They should be congradulated for there passion to train.

Excellent read Jaysculls. As someone who has never trained with BJJ trainer regularly, I have to agree with all 17 tips. I cannot stand idiots saying that you shouldn't even begin training if you don't have a black belt to teach you. Today, there are so many videos, instructionals, forums, sites, books, seminars etc. If you have a good crew you can do wonders. Of course, you cannot compare that to training with real teacher , but you can still have excellent training and lots of fun.

We do sometimes have seminars in Croatia (Fabricio Werdum, Bruno Carvalho, old Jacare...) and I must say I am jelaous of you guys who have so many teachers and schools to choose from.

This was a great post. Everyone should have that mindset when training.

For those of you who say it's impossible to train without an instructor: how do you think this stuff got invented in the first place?

It's always easier to learn from someone who already knows, but if you seriously approach training on a regular basis, you will start coming up with some good strategies all on your own. That's how martial arts has developed and changed significantly throughout history.

If the ideas you come up with are really bad habits, they will be weeded out in sparring eventually.

That being said, I'm lucky enough to train with a great black belt currently and that has helped my rate of learning quite a bit. But I still learned a ton from my previous training where I did not have the luxury of an instructor teaching me on a regular basis.

sorry if im hacking this thread, but just curious....I train under a black belt instructor, but also at my weights training gym they have a room with a mat....is it not a good idea to mess around on the mat with someone who does not train BJJ but has trained in wrestling for years?

I'm not currently doing this but ive wondered if it could help or hurt if I rolleda wrestler ? I know we have different styles, but we'd probably go over different techniques together.

also...before i get flames, I never wrestled, so I do not know if wrestling and bjj are on totally different spectrums and if learnign wresling tactics might damage my bjj training?

feel free to flame or give your opinions.
