Pretty even actually... hard to make a choice between them imo.

Pretty correct response. Both are legends for their own reasons and accomplishments. It was a treat to watch both of their careers start to finish.

I voted Machida, but the difference is very slightly

1. Machida had a better prime (undefeated)
2. First I thought Machida Machida had better opponents, but then I've seen again who Shogun fought against. Same quality of opponents.
3. Machida lost to 8 people. Two were very close fights, I don't count them losses (Rampage and Davis), many believe Machida won. The other 6 people,... 4 are UFC champions, one is Yoel fucking Romero and (not in his prime) Brunson.
4. He lost to Shogun...actually twice.

Curious about Hendo vs Machida vs Shogun, who had a better career
Hendo has wins over Nog, Vitor, Wand, Sobral, Fedor, Shogun, Rich, Bisping and others

Bias but I’m gonna say Machida simply because of what he did after the second fight.

Both guys took some ugly losses to guys like Brunson and Smith who they would have steamrolled in their prime but Machida got back to two title fights and gave Weidman and Jones a run for their money and picked up some good wins along the way, Shogun’s best win since the second Machida fight was...Forrest? Machida beat Mousasi and Bader, two guys who are champions in Bellator right now, Hendo, Munoz, Vitor, and might be able to make one last run in Bellator.

Shogun was shot going into the first fight with Machida... The fact Shogun arguably won the first and KO'ed prime Machida should tell everyone who was better.

Machida didn't have the misfortunes that Shogun had with serious injuries.

Chinzo or Lyoto? It depends...

I like Shogun the most of the 3 and think Dan Henderson has the best win resume in MMA history.

I believe he should be the one right after the obvious 5-6 guys listed in the GOAT debates. His win list is insane.

I tend to think when it's that close, you have to look at H2H fights.

They split, but Shogun was definitely better over the entire span of fight time than Machida was (although I think the robbery chants were overblown in the first fight), so I would throw it to him.

The guy with 22 finishes out of 26 wins. If Shogun hurts you, you are getting finished.

I like Machida but he's had a ton of boring fights with not much going on since he's just looking to counter. His KOs were spectacular but his decisions were legendary in their tedium.

Ya. It was a thing of beauty, and as we transitioned to everyone being well rounded and good everywhere, watching Machida fight differently than every other Mo out there was a breath of fresh air.

But, Shogun is the right answer.

Machida IMO. He has some pretty violent loses but against monsters in their prime. His only bad loss is Brunson.

Meanwhile Shogun was finished by the likes of Sonnen, OSP, Forrest, Anthony Smith... etc.

Machida's style wasn't as effective outside his prime as Shogun's was. And arguably Shogun had better wins in his prime than Machida.

But right now Shogun is pretty shot, while Machida has seemingly managed to reinvent himself.

They are both good fighters. I love shogun but his training style isn't good for fighting long term.

Remember recently Machida was outstruck in a stand-up battle by Erik bloody Andyrs.
Machida was supposed to be this legandary karate man, training since he was 3 years old, then along comes a bruiser like Andyrs who was training about 3 years.
I don't think size was a factor since Lyoto always fought at LHw and has faced much bigger dudes.
Sadly for both Lyoto and Shogun the game moved on and they were left behind.

Two words for you

FOR TY

One day ......probably in about 25 years, you will understand what that means as an athlete.
