Economy 1 In 4 Bridges in Murica in Danger of Collapsing within 26 Years

There has been a bunch of construction around my area since Biden took office and especially since this bill has passed. Re doing multiple complex interchanges and loads of highway overpasses. It’s been a pain in the ass but totally worth it in the long run.
That local or state ones ?

When the first bridge collapses Republicans will absolutely blame Democrats although it’s completely their fault.

Murica, why you no build new bridge?

We are building new bridges.

Aging bridges in 16 different states are going to be rebuilt, as 6 billion dollars is allocated for this in the infrastructure bill. Dems also recently announced 300 million in grants to further go towards this purpose.

No thanks to the GOP of course, who promised this under Trump, gave up entirely, and tried to block us from succeeding as well.

As usual, Democrats came up with the solution, Republicans came up with cuts to those solutions, they compromise, then Republicans claim credit for the bill.

Are they just old, or did you guys do what we Brits did, using inappropriate materials like aerated concrete to save money?
They are old. We also repair very slowly and it is very costly for upkeep. I think it's a union thing. They are paid by the hour anyways. There is no incentive to finish the project faster.

Which bill did Republicans prevent from going forward would have fixed this issue?

Fern Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh had collapsed back in January of 2022.

Which bill did Republicans prevent from going forward would have fixed this issue?
That’s a pretty dishonest question.

How about asking “Which bill(s) did Republicans try to prevent from going forward that would have fixed this issue”?

The fact they weren’t successful doesn’t absolve them for trying.

I-83 in Harrisburg, PA -- aka the John Harris Bridge -- is definitely in need of that $500 million. Glad to see that is a priorty.

LOL, what is that supposed to mean?

House
Democrats = 220 Yay, 0 Nay
Republicans = 8 Yay, 205 Nay

Senate
Democrats = 48 Yay, 0 Nay
Republicans = 19 Yay, 30 Nay
Independents = 2 Yay, 0 Nay

Do you think Republicans should get credit for passing a bill they overwhelmingly rejected?

Why should anyone get credit for passing an infrastructure bill if the infrastructure is still completely fucked?

Right on. :)
I’ve never been to PA that I can recall, but I’m glad to see that some of things are being done. If it wasn’t for the GOP and dbags like Joe Manchin, Dems could’ve done even better for he American people. They had to trim quite a bit off that bill to get it through. :/

I’ll say this: Biden might be a geriatric fuck, but he actually got quite a lot done for one term. I hope we can continue to improve America’s infrastructure, we really need it.

You understand these projects are nowhere near done, right? It’s going to take years to rebuild all this shit.

One way to have had it done much sooner would’ve been for Trump and the Republicans to deliver the infrastructure bill they promised in 2016. Did they even try? I don’t even recall them drafting a bill.

Oh I didn't realize you could only fix shit during the four years out of the last sixteen that Republicans had the white house.

So how many bridges have been fixed since 2021 ?

Kind of a lot built, repaired, replaced, planned, and funded. A quick search turned these up.

22nd St Revitalization - Tucson AZ
Orlando Intl Airport - Orlando FL
Railroad Bridge Overpass - Lexington KY
I387 Community Reconnection Project - Detroit MI
Victory Infrastructure Project - Fernley NV
W. 51st St. Extension Project - West Tulsa OK

You can actually see all the stuff the money is going to on a state by state basis on the White House website. https://www.whitehouse.gov/invest/state-fact-sheets/

I just found out theres a bridge project like 20 minutes from me on a road I take to get to/from Chinatown.

But bear in mind it was not the "bridge bill" the money went to expand american manufacturing, modernize the grid, modernize ports, cleanup superfund sites, etc... and it's not all done yet.

While I can tell you in the manufacturing sector I'm already seeing the benefits of that spending, it's just getting going. We won't even fully realize the economic benefits until the Trump or Harris administration (and they will take full credit for that bump).

The only thing dems succeed at is destroying this country in one form or another. From allowing grown men to compete in women's sports, to record inflation, record illegal immigration, we are at an elevated risk nuclear war.

The country is going great under democratic leadership. Who knows what we could accomplish in the next 4 years under kamala. We might just finish the job and bury america.

Some key points:

  • Obama signed a 305 billion dollar infrastructure bill. But Dems didn’t have majorities in both houses past 2010.
  • 305 billion is less than 1/3 of what Dems did during Biden Admin.
  • In true Republican form, it was littered with problems regarding how this was all funded:

“A big shortcoming in the bill, though, is how it’s all financed. The main source of revenue for transportation is the trust fund, which comes mostly from the 18.4-cents-a-gallon gasoline tax. That tax hasn’t been raised since 1993 even though transportation spending has increased. But raising the gas tax is viewed by many lawmakers as too politically risky.

To make up the shortfall, the bill uses about $70 billion in mostly budget ploys, including one that would move $53 billion from the Federal Reserve Bank’s capital account to the general treasury. It’s counted as new money on paper, but is actually just a transfer of funds from one government account to another, federal budget experts said.”

That’s your Republican Party hard at work for us…

It's always someone else's fault. Do you ever get bored of posting the same excuses for everything?

Let’s see…

In short order we got Trump’s disorganized vaccine rollout mess under control, got people vaxxed and ended the pandemic, brought the inevitable post-pandemic inflation down from 8% down to 2.9%, capped insulin and other prescriptions drugs permanently for those on Medicare, passed a 1 trillion dollar infrastructure bill, plus the 550 billion dollar Build Back Better Act (to invest in child care, health care, clean energy, higher ed, and other things), passed the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen American manufacturing…

All in one term.

You poor baby, how have you ever survived?!? You’re not used to seeing Congress actually do shit, you must’ve been shell-shocked. <lol>
