Boxing was/is the the only combat sport that came close to soccer.

Boxing is dying since 1900, but its still the biggest combat sport worldwide.

Hespect.

Imagine nowadays a fight that big. Maymac did under 5 million buys and we thought that was fucking massive....

Plus back when this happened, 1b would be what, 20% of the human population?

Kind of mind boggling....

''Boxing is dying since 1900''

You realize you just cited a 70s fight to talk about how popular boxing is? Then you say it's been dying since 70 years previous to that. Yeesh lol, fuck off @iwillbebackin3weeks

that billion wasn't a number of PPV buys, though.

Tyson vs McNeely drew 1.6m

Stop making shit threads. Soccer is what kids play and guys afraid to get hit do to make ends meet. Boxing is what men do to settle disputes and score hot babes for a living.

So trolling the heavies wasn’t enough. Hope the mods are less patient here.

Im not trolling.

I didnt even know that Ali vs Foreman was soooo big. 1.2 billion watched WC final (last year) ... that was amazing. I bet some of you didnt even know that.

Boxing was the biggest sport in the world back then, and there were only 3 commercial channels in the US and no internet. It was somewhat a product of its times. It’s worldwide viewership is outstanding.

The World Cup is a once every 4 years event but impressive nonetheless this day in age.

I’d think Mayweather/Pacman would’ve been on the champions league final sort of viewership if on network tv. So about 200 million or so.

Or you could just lie about your numbers like the Tour de France does every year

I know but even if a dozen watched per ppv buy it wouldnt even sniff a billy
my point being the fight was broadcast all around the world on many networks, hence the insane viewer number.

put mayweather pacquiao in 2015 on network tv channels around the globe and the numbers get pretty fucking crazy.

It just proves how good AliVsGeorge was even today, boxing is still a growing sport so who knows how good it will do in the future?

On radio, the majority of Americans listened to Dempsey vs. tunney.

I think two people even had heart attacks during the long count.

Ali-Foreman was a closed circuit event that you had to pay to watch at your local arena or theatre if wanting to watch it live in North America. It wasn't a free network television event, although replay rights would have certainly been purchased by one of them and then shown later.

Love to see the radio audiences score cards during that fight

elvis did a show that was seen by about as much i think. more people as well as more distractions today, the media is splintered in a billion directions. Like with elvis, they say like half the population saw some of his early tv performances but really, there were only 2 or 3 channels then, it doesn't mean all that much in retrospect.
