The UFC would be better off re-signing the male flyweight talent that they let go when they wanted to kill the division.
I never understood why they gave up on the division because it doesn't draw, but are committed to promoting a bunch of terrible WMM
My theory
The biggest expense for a division is the champion.
As long as the champion brings in more than they were getting paid the division is profitable.
The other fighters in the division get paid the same has the other filler bodies in the UFC. So it doesn’t really matter for the UFC what division those guys are in they are all interchangeable
DJ didn’t draw back well and he always gave the company trouble so the UFC consider just scraping the FLWs.
They changed course when Cejudo took the belt and became the double champ because they were for getting a champ for two divisions for the price of one, Cejudo seemed to have greater marketing potential and most importantly was willing to work with the company.
Nunes being a double champ the UFC gets two champs for the price of one. And she is easy to work with.
Plus it’s clear that Nunes is gonna be running out of bodies at 135
The only real downside about getting more WFWs is that hardcores will complain but the casuals, who are the overwhelming majority of their audience won’t care at all. So the UFC will just ignore that
In fact, casuals are actually pretty impressed by can crushing. Having a division of cans can be very profitable
WORST CASE SCENARIO: Nunes retires as champion the scrap the division
BEST CASE SCENARIO: A couple years down the round some younger fighter takes out a older Nunes and becomes a star
There really is no downside
