Over the last decade or so I think Stewart Lee is without a doubt the best standup working, obviously not identical in style but I tend to view him as a natural successor to George Carlin.

Big fan and when he's on point he really is a genius, but I've been to a few of his shows when he just didn't connect and it turned into more of an unfunny, comedy elitist rant. Still, he nails it most of the time, which is why he edged Hicks on my list.
