Why water and not juice/soda/beer for disaster?

Realistic disaster scenarios don't last long enough to make that a major issue. It isn't hard to rub your body down with some sanitizing agent that has moisturizers added.

Really? "Realistic disaster scenarios" don't last longer than 24 hours?

Sodas and juices don't dehydrate you. I doubt beer dehydrates you as well. It's just water is so much better for hydration. There are plenty of people that have gone years only drinking sodas or juices, not water. They survive. They aren't exactly the most healthy individuals, but they survive.

For the scenario, I'd rather have water. The calories and other things in any of the other drinks won't be near sufficient enough to matter without food.

wtf when i'm thirsty the last fucking thing i'd want to drink is soda, juice, and certainly not BEER. What the fuck!?!

You're wrong. Beer does not have enough alcohol in it to serve as a diuretic. People in the 14th century only drank ale/wine because of unclean water. Sugar only dehydrates your body if it is in EXTREMELY high levels or you are a diabetic.

The Ale drank in the 14th century wasn't Bud Light, it had a very low percentage of alcohol, 1-2%. Stronger stuff was available but that was when they were trying to get drunk.
Same with Romans and wine. It was always diluted with water to a lower alcohol percentage, only Barbarians and Plebs drank wine straight

You need water for many different things during a disaster than just drinking. It's probably the most critical resource you need for a disaster. During a major incident where your power is down and there's no other clean water available, you'll need clean water for cooking and hygiene purposes. Since the majority of cities in First World countries obtain their water through grid power, a long term power outage will leave towers unfilled rapidly and then you're out of luck.

For short term disasters, like a power outage for just a few days, you'll be fine drinking whatever you want. Beer is mostly water, so you can get by on it short term. The problem with beer is alcohol reduces the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) production in your body, making you urinate up to three times more urine than normal. When you're urinating a lot more, you need to drink more fluids to replace what you lost hence if you only have beer to rely on it's only going to make it worse for you. This is why soda pop isn't a great idea either - caffeine has a similar affect on ADH.

Long term though (and they do happen - after Hurricane Katrina it was more than just a few days for many folks to get what they needed) water is the far better option as there are just more uses for it.

Because waters good for you ya dummy.

Your body is made up of like 80% water. Soda dissolves car batteries, beer dehydrates you, juice is just as sugary as soda but if it's 100% fruit juice it isn't nearly as bad for you as soda. Having some alcohol around in the end would be nice, for sure, but traveling, especially on foot, means you need only the necessities. Water is necessary for life, it is what composes the majority of your body. The premise of this thread is mind numbinly stupid.
