Today, there's all this discord about not being offensive, and suppressing freedom of speech, and fake news, and freedom of press, and fat shaming, and affirmative action, and ... ... ... ... ... ... .... ...
...
...
...
and homosexuality, and nationalism, and gender, and immigration! *huff* *puff* *puff*

And I finally figured out why discord is so prevalent nowadays.

1. Internet
Today, we have more immediate access to communication media than ever before, with the proliferation of smart phones and constant Internet access.
However, we use these media to readily convey our conflicting viewpoints which causes discord. More communication means more arguments and therefore more hatred.

2. Negative Press, Terrorism
Moreover, a century ago, limitations on communication meant we were more blissfully unaware of negative events. This also made terrorism less effective. So we were less fearful, and therefore less prone to protest and activism.

3. Activism
Speaking of activism, before the Internet and cars, it was much more difficult to assemble large protests, so angry people could not easily spread their dissatisfaction. Especially since media couldn't easily cover these protests.

4. Anonymity & Less Personal Interaction
Also, the Internet allows us the convenience of anonymity. When people communicate in person, they tend to be more civil, but with anonymity we can be more cruel with impunity. This causes trolling.

5. More Travel
Finally, cheap and fast travel allows us to interact with people we don't know and cultures we don't relate to. A Texan, for example, and quickly travel to San Francisco. More travel means more diversity of opinion which again means more discord.

TLDR
You see, open discussions and diversity of opinion have actually DIVIDED us, not united us.

We'd be less argumentative, hateful, and fearful if we were all ignorantly incubated in small, homogeneous communities like before. That's why cities are so much more violent than rural communities.

Ironic result, isn't it?
