Capitalism says your welcome. Consumerism is king and your archaic WASP values are already dead.

This is why if you talk to a russian who lived in the USSR they will tell you that they have alot more shit today then they did under USSR rule, but that their was a sense of community in the USSR that capitalism has destroyed there.

    Member, greed is good.

Freedom is a very new concept and this is the result. And one thing I think people don't take into consideration are economic factors. The wealthy and powerful have always been hedonists even when they were running theocracies. Now wealth is more spread out which gives people more access to being hedonistic. I don't think people of the past were morally superior, they were just controlled more and did not have the resources for luxury.

Jordan Peterson mentions that religion evolved as a set of symbolic stories that teach the social ethics necessary for a human being to manoeuvre in the world optimally. So religion is like a roadmap or an instruction manual, laid out in story format because humans think in symbols and narrative.

So what happened is that religion was debunked, in the sense that it was proven that the story is false in a literal sense. So religion got thrown away. But the problem is that by throwing away the idea of religion as a literal story, we ended up throwing away the instruction manual contained within it along with the literal story. So now you have entire generations that have no instruction manual. The idea of religion as a literal story is never coming back, but the instruction manual is culture, it doesn't need literal religious belief, it could be brought back in any form. And that's basically what Peterson is trying to do when he insists that people act meaningfully, speak truthfully, act like their actions have consequences, clean their own house and after they do that, help their family or their community, etc. He's insisting that people get back a sense of meaning in life that was lost. That's his take.

Good post; the baby got thrown out with the bath water.

You see it in countries like China: many people have no religion, and as a result the level of morals and ethics there is extremely low. Or they do have religion, ancestor worship, but it's purely self-serving and is merely praying for God to help them and nobody else.

    Sad.

    Religion as an instruction manual?

*Instructions unclear, declared jihad against my neighbour and murdered them all*

Religion is not a good instruction manual for society, laws are.

I think larger issues are the complete lack of both objectivity and accountability.

I dont think you can reduce religion to just that or if you want to be fair, you'd also have to mention the great humanitarianism done in the name of it. The laws in of themselves cannot be the instruction manual because they are supposed to be rooted in some type of ethic and morality which is where the laws came from in the first place.

Our legal system, in essence, predates the christianization of the west and its still there after the secularization of the west.

This is is false and such bullshit. It's an over used cliche by young people such as yourself. Generations are not all the same. You'll understand it the older you get.

It's a pretty good case of ressentiment though. You're being morally reactive instead of morally proactive.

It is not a very new concept, unless you want to argue that 2000 years ago is a long time, because on the scale of human existence on this Earth 2000 years is not very long. The concept has changed however from positive liberty to negative liberty.

And this idea of decadence in the present and a distant past where people were morally righteous is as old as civilization. Maybe it's true that with progress, decadence ensues. Look at any roman annals or histories, they're always saying how people were good in the past and now everyone is soft and immoral.
