1) He was WW champ and would only move up if it was permanent. Fighting once at 185 while champ wasn't in his best interests and nobody around him wanted him to do it

2) He's been out of the game for years and has bulked up

Bisping in 2017 isn't half of what Anderson Silva was 7 years ago. GSP wasn't scared of Silva, but he knew he was giving up a lot weight and reach vs. a terminator. Bisping is weak in comparison and GSP even with a 4 year layoff likes these odds better and he is willing to fight at 185 for a belt vs. the catch weight of 178 or 180 they were discussing previously with Silva.

You are missing some information. GSP said that, and then tried to gain the weight. He got up to 194 (I read he is 197 now) and he could not get much bigger and the size hurt his performance so he went back to 187 which is optimal for his frame. GSP is not much bigger now than he was when he fought Shields, the weight just hurt him at WW, GSP will never be a MW, he is a big LW.
