Why didn't Stipe wrestle JDS?

Stipe is a great wrestler, and Cain laid out the blueprint for how to beat JDS.

Why in the first fight and even the second fight in which he won, did Stipe not resort to his wrestling pedigree to beat JDS?

Even if Stipe has an edge in the standup on JDS (which now he might have, but in the past, I don't know), surely it is still a risk to box with the guy.

I questioned whether or not Stipe would resort to wrestling against Francis because it seems like he abandoned that gameplan in the past.

Cain didn't really beat Jnr with wrestling though, more via working him against the cage which Stipe did try, albeit not as aggressively as in the second fight.

He tried in the first, went 1-18 on TDA. Cain didn't get him down very often or for very long, either. The take down defense is real in JDS.

Cain's wrestling is better than Stipe's wrestling

He felt he could hang standing up VS JDS ?

    especially the fight #2

Seeing the result of the fight, Stipe made a wise choice.

Stipe did try to wrestle in the first fight and it didn't work. He is not as good at wrestling and doesn't have the cardio that Cain had when he beat JDS. The main thing Cain did was outwork JDS, most people couldn't pull off that game plan because they would get too tired.

JDS had good takedown defense but even better hands. His control of distance/hands kept Stipe at bay. It's a shame JDS is a shell of his former self when they fought a 2nd time.

JDS has better TDD defense than he does standing, IMO. He has this horrible tendency to glue his back to the cage and shimmy away when pressured. I've caught myself yelling at him to get off the cage a few times (as if I was there), before his opponent takes advantage and punishes him for it.

And of course, there was the second fight with Stipe which proved how horrible this tendency was.

JDS was an amazing fighter. The JDS we saw in the 2nd fight is not remotely close to how good he once was.

The JDS who fought Werdum or Struve, would have murked Ngannou or Stipe. But alas, that JDS is just a memory now.

Stipe is good, but hes not prime JDS, Cain level good.

Cain would beat Ngannou as well.

When you feel you can hang standing, you hang.

But the takedown must always be a threat to the opponent so he does not get comfortable.

Stipe was def. gassed later in that fight. Even led to a badass JDS trip as he was trying to rest in the clinch.

I’d suggest that TS rewatch the first JDS fight.

As for the rematch, Stipe likely identified JDS’s vulnerabilities on his back foot and tendency to retreat against the cage.

JDS’ biggest weakness is being pressured up against the fence, Stipe took the easiest path to victory
