Why did Silva's leg break the way it did??

Weidman checked the kick with his Knee.
No, he checked the kick with the upper part of his tibia which is way thicker than the part of the same bone that Silva kicked him with. If he had checked the kick with his knee Silva's shin would still have broke, but then neither of them would have been able to walk out from the Octagon.
 
The shock wave traveled down the bone until it met the weakest point where it could shatter most clean.

If you find a video, you can slow it down and watch it happen.
 
Wrong technique. Imagine you have a tree plank.. It's much easier to break it from the side then it is from above. You can compare that with this situation.. kinda :D
