jean popular choice or his older brothers ?
I was always told that Rigan was the 2nd best in the family. Only Rickson was better.
Jean Jacques has the best record in competition, and I always thought he was considered the most technical. Rigan is a big dude, so that makes him harder to deal with.
Jean Jacques only has 2 fingers on his left hand and is still considered one of the GOATs.
People in the family and extended family (Gracies and Machados, and their entourages) say Rigan. Based on anything that we can actually watch (i.e. competition), it's JJ.
JJ by quite a bit imo
JJ would seem to be the most technical since he had to learn a style that offset his physical limitations. Rarely can you impose an athletic game when your left hand is malformed.
I say JJ is also the best teacher, most and best pound for pound amongst the Machados. I wouldn't be surprised however if he was soundly beaten by Rigan or any of his other brothers though.
Rigan is the consensus best Machado. As someone said, size does matter.
I don't know, but there is an old Carlos Machado instructional out there that in my opinion is the best bjj instructional ever.
Honestly i can't believe one could get more technical than Carlos Machado.
I believe it was the dog brothers that had Carlos teach some ground work in their instructional video. How he taught the kimura from guard is by far the best I ever seen. Basically the side of the opponent's arm is glued to your chest. This way he cannot straighten his arm to defend. Works against strong guys too. So while I agree he is one of the best I seen on video when it comes to teaching ( only Rorion is probably better) but that doesn't mean he is the best Machado.
First time I have ever hear Rorion as a good instructor. I don't have an opinion either way just never heard that before. He does have an cool voice
Straight ability and talent? Rigan. Most accomplished? JJ.
Based on what is out there in terms of footage, Jean JAcques. But many have said that Rigan is the best. Not a whole lot of footage of him out there though
Rigan by armbar
IMHO, Rorion Gracie is probably the greatest instructor on any subject of all time. His ability to teach Jiu-jitsu is unparalleled. Even Rickson Gracie said on Rogan's show that's Rorion is the best teacher he has ever seen. I completely agree and I don't even like Rorion that much. I do however respect him a lot.
Lets not get too crazy.
Yeah..... but he's still a pretty damn good teacher...
A Gracie said a Gracie was the best teacher ever. Shocking.
When you consider Rorion and Rickson's history it is, they didn't speak for years.
To be a great instructor you need great students, rorion has none
