GOAT anime intro song, imo.

Honestly I think Kon was by far the best anime writer/director of the post 80's to mid 90's era, I imagine the OP watching Perfect Blue or Millennium Actress waiting for the giant robots to turn up though.

I still have to watch Paprika (got it on my shelf)

One Punch Man is the greatest thing to be put to screen in the last decade.

Cowboy Bebop isn't just the best anime show of all time, it's one of the best TV shows ever of any type.

Watch with the original actors and the English subtitles if you're man enough to do it though. The dub is hailed as being the best anime dub ever, but the originals are still better.

One Punch Man is the best current anime right now. Only 1 season so far

The only problem with starting with Ninja Scroll is that it will set your expectations for other action anime very high, and you will constantly be disappointed when watching something new thinking to yourself 'it's good, but not Ninja Scroll good'
That's true. There are other animes like Sword of the Stranger in that same vein but none of them really come close. Samurai Champloo is probably another accessible one.

I think people recommend NInja Scroll (and rightly so) partly because it doesn't have a lot of cultural or stylistic "Japanese weirdness" like moe or chibi moments or lolicon stuff which tends to put westerners off. It's mostly a straight forward ninja action movie.

For Gore... you really can't go wrong with Attack on Titan. Enough chaotic violence that it can actually be a pain learning their complicated german names, only to see them die within an episode. Overall though, surprisingly engrossing storyline. I did not expect it to get as deep as they got. Lots of twists.

Notes:
- Kid Goku in Dragon Ball is the best protagonist of any TV show in history. Don't be fooled, Dragon Ball Z is the kids show. Dragon Ball is for adults.
- Anime never got a stronger "WHAT?" Moment than the end of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
- Fun Fact: The Guy who created Yu Yu Hakusho developed a manga story with his friend, where they bounced back ideas and mutually created a world together. They differed opinions slightly enough that they both made their own show out of the same idea. One went on to become Hunter x Hunter, the other went on to become Naruto.
- Cowboy Bebop, Space Cowboy. Blues & Jazz. Oozes Cool.
- Samurai Champloo, Urban Samurai. Rap & Hip Hop. "Fresh" and Tarantino esque.
- Death Note is the most intelligent, convoluted, and impossible to write anime you will ever see. It's the closest youll ever come to seeing a chess match acted out through characters.
- Gurren Lagaan is good, fast paced, and then immediately over.
- Naruto Shippuden is better than Naruto, but Watching Naruto first will make Shippuden better.
- Parasyte - Felt like a very good movie played out over 8-9 hours. Dark, intelligent, and has heart.
- One Punch Man - Good Show. Different premise. Subverts certain Anime tropes that you may really only get if you watch anime first. Ultimately the ending falls flat, because the premise is impossible to work a serious stuggle into.
- Bleach is a garbage television show except for the episodes that pertain the the Rukia Kuchiki - Captain Aizen Arc, that arc is one of the strongest arc's in television history.
Yu Yu Hakusho #1.

And to @HulkonViagra , I personally recommend:

Well balanced anime with a dark overtone.

I refused to watch FMA for the longest time just because the fanbase was so annoying. I regret it now. Loads of really interesting, well-developed characters. I have to recommend Brotherhood over the 2003 anime though. That one kinda goes off the rails toward the end.

So I go with Baki the Grappler, Hajime No Ippo and than HSDK.

Good to know that Baki and Hajime have been posted and so, I will contribute by posting Kenichi/HSDK:

Fun fact, my username and avatar is a character in the Kenichi series and he is one of the most badass characters ever and an amazing martial arts master who specializes in an ancient form of mixed martial arts.

I would agree with you on brotherhood, but the 1st series is good enough to have a movie as the finale.

Ah yes, the unbridled genius of dramatic potato chip eating! Sorry, but Death Note is one of the most self-important pieces of nonsense I've ever watched. And the second half of the series is crap without you-know-who.

I have always been a Marvel and DC comics fan and have only seen a couple of Dragon Ball Z episodes...but I have recently seen certain clips of anime which I thought I can personally get into.

Is there aby type of gore filled anime type stuff?

I need recommendations people!!!
Towa No Quon

Zetman

Deadman Wonderland

At least Near could pull the trigger.

I just could not get into FMA. The first episodes were hella slow

Cowboy Bebop is a terrible idea to start with if you're looking to get into the genre further later on, it'll make 99% of the genre pale in comparison if it does click with you. You never start with the best unless we're talking about food. Aside from that, some very good suggestions in this thread with the usual classics.

Another good one to watch is the Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OVAs. I almost completely forgot about those, but they've got quite a bit of action and violence in them. The animation is really well done too.

They act as a prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin TV series and tell the origin of the main character. The series is completely different from the OVAs though, much more comical and not nearly as violent. I saw the OVAs first and could never get into the TV show because of how different it was.
