McAvoy is great and worthy successor to Tobey Maguire, who'd carved out a nice niche playing watchable weirdos. While there is always something a bit off about a Maguire character, McAvoy delves more deeply into the "disturbed" realm. There's nothing quite a gleeful as McAvoy succumbing to his baser, off nature(s). He's also masterful at playing the guy trying to hold it together, too. It's rewarding to see him cutting loose.

Ethan has always come off as eerily natural. You seen Great Expectations (1998)? That film in its own way is a masterpiece of storytelling - music, vibe, setting, Ethan...the whole nine.
