You know that "stereotypical Chinese culture music" sequence, nine notes, you don't even have to think hard.
I've always wondered how that same pervasive series of notes came to be the American stand in for actual Chinese music...
Maybe it was established in an old Hollywood flick.
It's actually five notes, it's called the pentatonic scale (if you play just the black keys on a piano you're playing in pentatonic) and it's not an American construct. It's the actual basis of almost all traditional Chinese music
