Imagine going back to the days of the phalanx, the days of the Romans, Alexander the Great, and the Samurai.

In these melee, hand-to-hand sword and spear fights, who has the best build?

In those days, speed literally killed.

How about the fastest guy -- Mighty Mouse? 5'3" 135. Or does his small size, lack of strength, and lack of reach mean that he's going to get hit first despite his speed?

What about Brock Lesnar? 6'3" 270 83" reach. Does his huge strength, size, and reach give him an advantage? Or will his bulk slow him down enough that he gets wrecked first?

Stefan Struve? 7' 84" reach. Does his huge height and reach mean he'd dominate?

Anderson Silva, Jon Jones? 6'2" 78" reach 200 lbs. 6'4" 84" reach 220 lbs. Not huge but big enough to not be tiny. Also huge reach and speed. Are they dominant?

Let's discuss this.

Hunt, Big Country, and Lewis. Strong enough to wear heavy armor, hard hitting enough to swing big long weapons and take opponents out quick, big enough to clear baths in a melee and break through defenses, "insulated" enough to take a few cuts/stabs/arrows without anything vital being hit or going down too early.

Probably, John Jones because he would not have to worry about USADA

Probably MW would be best, get a blend of cardio, athletism and side

& most importantly, the champion of the coliseum:

I strongly discourage Royce from pulling guard on the battlefield
I agree with you though, I think thicker Heavyweights would classically have a major advantage in those days.

How good is all that strength though if you're too gassed to hold a sword and shield after 5 minutes of battle?

Also the military is brutal on your body today.. back then it must have been terrible. A guy with weight like Big Country or Lewis is going into battle with wrecked knees and a bad back. Mark Hunt is a wildcard because his frame is fucking ridiculous.

I say guys weighing 185-225. That's basically middleweight to light heavy guys on their fight day weight. Back then, men were probably smaller, so perhaps you can drop the weight to170. Too big or too small would pose problems.

Eh like the guy said speed kills, size would just make you a bigger target, probably lightweight to middle weight would be perfect. Or a small compact heavyweight with speed like DC. DC would destroy in those days

Since the first hit can kill, a lack of height like DC has would be a huge problem. "Eating one punch" to get inside = eating a spear to the face

What does height have to do with anything when weapons are involved?

Who's spear reaches the other guy first -- Mighty Mouses' or Jones'? Who is getting more torque on their sword swings? Who can pull the string back further on the bow?
