The only rules I've ever heard my instructor give is "if something hurts just tap" and "don't be jerks to each other we are learning and having fun"

My academy doesn't allow takedowns in live rounds.

    It's kinda of a bummer.

In live rounds, no takedowns are allowed except guard pulling. Open mat starts from knees. IDK.

In the gi we follow IBJJF. No-gi, we throw everything though we have a pretty solid culture of safety so no one throws anything they're not expert enough to apply safely. We have very few injuries.

Our gym doesn't worry about IBJJF- we aren't affiliated with them, so no sense worrying.

White / Blue belts can do straight ankle locks, and knee bars - everything else is discouraged.

Purple and up - can do everything in gi. Heel hooks, reaping, slicers, etc. By that point, you should understand how to role safely with any technique.

No-gi- everything is legal, though we don't teach HH until we know they are not meathead idiots.
