Opinion What happened to freedom of speech in the UK? (Long read)

They're trying to ban memes online also IIRC. Not sure if that has been legalized.
I think that's article 13 from the european union you're talking about , we're leaving the EU so hopefully their laws won't relate to us anymore.

Would this mean that comedy writers could not longer offend? Or you couldn't if you performed standup comedy but only in your home town?
well comedy writers require a comedian to perform their material. So they get a pass also.

and no, if you only do stand up in your own town you are hardly a professional comedian(unless you live in some metropolitan area of course) lol

You can pursue whatever dream you want as long as you've got the bollocks for it or 'courage equal to desire' as Yeats puts it .

Well then give it up if you've not got the bottle for it .
People who go to prison don't go to prison because they're brave, they go because they're idiots and they didn't think they'd get caught generally speaking.

This isn't about balls or machismo, going to prison isn't gonna help anything ,just look at the people who got arrested and imprisoned for jokes, doesn't look like a lot of public support is there for them, most people are like these idiots.
I don't have any sympathy for the people who burnt the effigy of the Grenfell Tower. There was nothing funny or clever about that.

Find me a quote by anyone admitting they found burning an effigy of Grenfell Tower while chanting things like, "Stay in your homes, help is coming!" to be hilarious. Take your time. I'll wait.

Now, I freely admit that things like charging a dog owner with a hate crime because the dog barked at coloured person, or fouled the pavement outside their house, is a ridiculous waste of time and money. Especially when police lack both the resources and, in many cases, the intestinal fortitude to deal with real crime.

I also think it's grotesque that a man is convicted for a hate crime, without the case even being judged by a jury of his peers, for teaching a Pug dog to do a, "Nazi salute" when it hears the phrase, "Gas the Jews!". As Jonathon Pie pointed out, the comedian was, if anything, taking the piss out of Neo-Nazis by comparing them and their beloved Fuhrer to a cute little dog.

That said, there is clear blue water between using offensive language and images to make a legitimate point through the medium of comedy, and people just acting like ignorant, selfish cunts. The first should be defended to the death. The second? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

<Fedor23>

You're getting way too upset over a few retards taking the piss out of Grenfell and being punished for it. Frankly, there are more important things to worry about.

he's not a comedian

They'll call me a non comedian, they'll say my jokes weren't jokes, they'll tell me what my own intentions were and label me every buzzword on the book, racist/sexist/etc..
And once they did all of that ,all the public will think is "he deserved it", because of the slander that the press would have done on my name, and get this, technically they can legally do it because the court will convict me because the laws are retraded, so then it's perfectly ok for the media to tell these lies about me as long as the court already has. Just like how count dankula got labelled an antisemite for his joke by the judge and prosecuter, even though he was clearly joking. So if the court defames you, the press can defame you and i'll be one of these stories that people Wizz by thinking "play stupid games win stupid prizes" .
That's why I don't think it'll help me or anyone to get sent to prison.

@AgonyandIrony would this be an apt definition of a comedian? Someone who did stand up in more than 1 town (unless it's a big town)? Or do we draw the line at # of audience members and/or amount of laughs?

I actually had to add the metropolitan part because that didnt come into my thinking at first either. I suppose if that person performs regularly and is paid for doing so you'd have to consider him/her a comedian.

Comedians don't start getting paid immediately. And what is regularly? Would someone stop being a comedian after a long lay off? "Regular" is very subjective.

well if you want to get nitpicky it is lol

Shit, if there's a possibility of me getting arrested or fined over a joke, I'd get very nitpicky. You'd do the same.
the UK has some really edgy comedians and none of them have been prosecuted for anything as far as I know. its just idiots being idiots then saying "it was just a joke" afterwards that have been caught out so far.

I meant that in response to all those quotes you pulled, of people who say they believe in free speech, but don't defend it when it is under attack.

Sounds like you want a whole bunch of rights without wanting to do a thing about them. At least you're honest about that. Andddd Im done responding to people who complain yet do fuck all.
You should read this.

You could write some jokes that expose the truth about the rules that are being implemented. Your audience likely doesnt know about them, or they dont have the brass to speak about them. Have to write them smart and subtle.

You might have people leaving with something to think about, and wanting to come back to see what you have to say next.

But.. if you arent funny or clever, forget I ever made this post.

come

This all seems a bit academic , like someone with a microcock fretting over what the effect of obscenity laws might have on their dream of being a porn star .

So you're saying you think i'm not funny anyway so I shouldn't be concerned about the whether or not the law allows me to tell my jokes?
Here's the thing, amy schumer made millions and I don't think she's funny, If she did that then I like my chances at being able to pay my bills through comedy eventually.
