Massive oversimplification.
Yes, the Americans needed a foreign source of funding to fight a war. But it's not like England fought using only its own country's land and resources.
England was funded by various other colonies, as well as having taxed the American colonies prior. It had a large war-chest built up.
America had to scramble quickly as it was barely a nation (not even fully united) and if it hadn't been for Benjamin Franklin's charismatic skills, the French would not have been partners in the war. It was a gutsy play which paid off with nothing short of a miracle.
Both England and America were in a race for resources and numerous allies to help them fight this war, and England had a massive head-start with pre-established supply lines, colonies, and sustained trade establishments (and overall MUCH larger pool of money and resources, as well as established armorments and military with prior training and hundreds of years of experience).
Despite the backing of France, the American Colonies were at a grave tactical disadvantage.
England had by far the upper hand and it still lost.
