They are city council members with no background, training, or experience in medical or law enforcement fields trying to tell medical and law enforcement workers how to do their job by reviewing old reports.

They are like a live version of a jodred thread where someone with no working knowledge of a subject acts as an authority on said subject after reading an article online.

What training and experience do you feel they need to evaluate wrong-doing in this situation?

Based on the nation-wide inability of police departments to hold themselves accountable after their officers have broken the law, it's clear that belonging to a police force might be the least useful quality.

Well, any would be an improvement. If you want civilian panels to oversee police or fire/EMS actions or policy the panel should include people with some experience or knowledge of what theyre supposed to be overseeing. Retired officers, judges, lawyers, fire/EMS, law professors, etc.

Would you want a panel of accountants or liberal arts graduates overseeing how a doctor should treat you in a hospital or would you prefer someone who knows a little bit about the best way to administer your treatment deciding the best course of action?

And yet police experience tends to be a hindrance in holding police accountable. Why do you think that is? Do you think police hold any responsibility for the necessity of civilian review boards?

You could have an alternate thread about what a cop did good today, but it would be a large and unwieldy thread.

You expect cops to be held to the absolute highest standards though surely?

I hear what you're saying but it's not a commendable achievement to say 'look how many people I didn't shoot today'.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the 1st amendment audits on YouTube? Guys who go wrong filming govt facilities who are arrested by cops of all levels who should simply know better.

Shooting part you said standing alone does not work.

Some people need to be shot.

It would be how many that should not have been shot that were shot as the negative.

All shootings are not bad shootings.

No one cares if someone does their job right. Its an issue when they do it wrong. Its more of an issue when cops do it wrong because people die, and freedom is lost.

The police chief in a small Florida town is accused of encouraging his officers to pin unsolved crimes on random, nearby black people so the department would have a better arrest record, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

This is certainly racist, and not just cops screwing over innocent people to make the Police record look good, cause the Chief didn't say pin the crimes on random folks, he told his underlings to pin on random Black folks.

Wonder how many town in the US has this problem; no way that this is a 1 off.

Class doesn't get ignored, there are many benefits that you qualify for just for being poor and indeed white communities do use them. For instance, poor white people can qualify for financial aid to help pay for college just like anyone else.

You could do the same for doctors. Difference is I have never seen doctors get nearly as defensive as cops when you criticize the medical establishment or doctors. In fact some of the most critical people I have seen of the healthcare industry are people who work in it themselves as doctors.

But cops are so thin skinned when it comes to criticism. "M-muh thin blue line!" Maybe we wouldn't need to talk about corrupt cops if cops actually policed each other instead of acting like a gang and following the "no snitching" rule.

To be fair you could justify it rationally on the basis that its just more believable to the general public. Look at the threads here, anytime a black person is involved in some sort of cop story so many posters assume the guilt of the black person. Even that kid who was merely asking for directions and was shot at was painted by many here as a probably thief. They just couldn't believe his side of the story.

Grab any random 17 year old black kid from the ghetto and say he committed this murder or that break in and see how many people buy it. Now if you accused a white girl would you get the same response? Not likely.

Nah bro, doncha know that with the election of Obama racism came to and end .

And if you dare to bring up racism and how some police target Blacks, it annoys lots of rightwingers.
