Was the Wrestlemani VII Hogan vs Slaughter storyline in poor taste?

Its the best thing going in old school rasslin
If you're only interested in 90's WWE then it might not be for you but if you wanna hear great stories from a buncha different people that were involved in all different aspects of the rasslin business over the years(promoters, bookers, workers, photographers, dirt sheet writers, ring rats, fan clubs) then its definitely worth checking out
He gets guests no one else gets that tells stories that you never hear on any other podcast
This week he has a guy on that worked for CCW and ISW which were hardcore indies right here in little old Co Co County back in the 90's

Co Co County as in Contra Costa County East Bay Area California?

Thats where Im born and raised and currently reside.
Yea thats why I mentioned it
Your location is P Hill and you've talked about Hoodslam before so it wasnt too hard to figure out lol
I'm from Pittsburg

The ISW/CCW guys that are talked about on the show are from Concord and did shows in Martinez
One of the chicks from the group ended up marrying Jim Cornette, if you listen to his podcast and here him talk about his wife Stacy, thats her

I remember now. My memory is shit.

Vince should've taken hint that Hogan's time as the top baby face was over. Of course that didn't stop him from booking him as the main event for the next two Manias.

Few things: Bruce is lying absurdly, they had comped tickets at the arena, the Coliseum would have been 7/8 empty.

It was a poor decision all the way through, as a child I was way more into WM 6 and this had better wrestling and star power. In the mid-80s Sarge was WWF's number 2 two guy (he quit over his GI Joe deal conflicting with WWF's line) and he had spent the last five years headlining the midwestern AWA which often had great ratings on ESPN. Granted scandal was hitting the industry (sex and drugs were creeping over the press) but Manias 6 and 8 had actual crowds in smaller cities.

Hell Pritchard brings up the flag burning (this feud ruined Slaughter's entire career, yes as champ he couldn't draw but neither could Cena if his character was switched to a child molester) and Flair immediately interjects saying how they dodged a bullet by not doing that (Sarge sternly refused).

Christianity profits from exploiting horrible things all the time.

You are overthinking things here. The combat operations in Afghanistan kicked off in 2001 and even the NFL capitalized on the war profiteering with a nationalistic SuperBowl 34 logo. Entertainment businesses have been cashing in on the war machine dating back years before Desert Storm.

Slaughter and Hogan were also in programs with Iron Sheik over the Iran hostage crisis.

Before Fritz von Erich was the patriarch of a bunch of good ol' Texas boys, he vas Der Enemy mitt der likes uv Baron von Raschke!

Was Rambo in poor taste, having a non-veteran portraying PTSD symptoms and post-service frustrations?

This is a good point but not a 1-1 comparison. The NFL (who is being paid to advertise the armed services even now) was cashing in on the general mood of the time as a crossover product. They didn't have a team of AQ guys get beat down by the Patriots. Whats lost here is that culture changes, Captain America and wrestlers weren't battling the Viet Cong in the 60's for a reason.

There is no reason why Sarge/Hogan couldn't draw a dime other than audiences hating the angle.

The Sheik stuff was in the 80's, time of Reagan, Cosby, Hair Metal, and Madonna. 1991 was a very different beast.

Fritz was part of the culture in a very specific way, especially since millions of Americans had served during WWII and had direct contact with Fascist believers. Even then it got over on some level because people were offended by the audacity of the angle, and even though Atdkisson put on the name and speech of a NAZI people in Texas were able to disassociate to the point of cheering him in old age.

First Blood humanized the pains and condition of real people, the cops he was fighting weren't heels. It wouldn't be impossible to have a military storyline in fiction, even wrestling, but it must be better than American hero loves Sadam (and his worst enemies in Iran too?) and hates Hulkamania. The Rambo sequels were a good example, they glorified the very violence that the first movie condemns (watch the well-intentioned third movie and try not to be horrified now). In fact Stallone with Rocky VI got the series back on track, but the fourth Rambo made nothing but mistakes in carrying on the sequels.

Always liked the Sgt!!! He did that ragdoll thing to dudues int he Cobra Clutch really well.

Hogan vs Slaughter was the only thing in bad taste, two immobile men trying to have a shitty street fight and worst chair shot resulting in a gig ever.
