It's not just assault, though. He kept two people, against their will, and beat the hell out of them. That's felony assault and kidnapping. That isn't trumped up. That's what it actually is.

And it isn't a technicality, either. He really did prevent these people from leaving so that he could beat on them. How in hell is that simple assault?

If I locked you and your mom up in a room and beat on you, I don't think you'd believe that was simple assault. The reason some of you think it's just an everyday assault is because somewhere in your mind you think you have more right to do that to your ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend than to a stranger and his mom.
