VIDEO: man shot by police in Baton Rouge (Alton Sterling thread)

he doesn't appear to be a threat at all in that position. why kill him then?

They were struggling with a physically strong man who had already shrugged off a taser blast. I don't blame them for erring on the side of safety. If he got one hand anywhere near his gun, it was a clean kill.

Difficult to feel sorry for the perp in this case. He was stupid enough to carry a weapon, even though he knew the penalty for doing so was ten years in jail. He resisted arrest, even though he must have known he couldn't escape.

He was the author of his own misfortune.

Dude you are smoking some good stuff. So a cop should have to call and ask his superior in order to use deadly force? Makes perfect sense.

And shooting into the sky is stupid, those rounds don't magically disappear.

I reiterate there are limited situations he/she utilize weapon (such as: to protect their life or the life of another innocent party and prevent a "dangerous" suspect from escaping

Is the ability to reach for the gun enough to kill him, or is it whether he actually did try to reach for his gun?
of course not, but his right hand by his side is very close to his gun, and the field of view as blocked. Only the cops holding him down can really say. If they say they did, I'll just have to take them for their word, considering all other factors.

Not a great camera shot, but it seemed like he was fully restrained. Gonna need a better video though.

What's the implication with the " looks like an execution " camp here? What do you think actually happened?

You think these cops that are wholly aware of the climate around this kinda shit right now , that also knew there were lots of eyes and cameras on them , just said " Fuck it Jim bob we got us another N%*##÷$ here dead to rights.. ....shoot that pos?

Every cop in the country knows what kinda circus is gonna ensue, and you honestly think his/ there desire to shoot an innocent black person trumps all that? Get real , not saying it hasn't happened, but come on.

What the fuck are you on about?

If you feel your life is in danger, they can shoot.

Shooting in the sky is illegal. Shooting in the leg is not taught in any police academy, anywhere.
in the UK, there is no "shoot-to-kill" policy. The law says that the police can use "reasonable force", firstly to stop a crime, and secondly, to arrest someone who is putting someone else in danger. If someone’s life is at risk, a police officer can intervene.

In other countries the legislations are more elaborate and strict and they only allow policeman to use the gun, like he shall target to kill the suspect, he should first use verbal warning, if the suspect do not adhere, the suspect shall shoot at the sky , if the suspect do not adhere, the policeman shall target his legs (shoot to wound not to kill), please check the website below for an example of this (P.S the translations sucks)

Right, but shooting in the sky in NA is illegal. For good reasons, those bullets can hit bystanders quite some distances away while learning to ride their tricycles during their parents backyard BBQ.

There's a group of about 50-75 people right outside TWC Arena in uptown Charlotte holding a demonstration right now for the two recent police involved shootings and the movement in general. Everyone chanting "no justice, no peace". Interesting.

Are you insane? Anywhere near his gun?

Look, being a cop is hard. Part of why it's hard is you may find yourself in dangerous situations. That does NOT give you the right to protect yourself first at the expense of someone else just because you think a threat may escalate. The perp was in no position to threaten without the cops being in position to THEN address the threat with force. Being scared is not sufficient to justify force. It's hard work. We entrust them to not panic. It's great responsibility.

Let me guess, they're also wearing Trayvon hoodies and carrying HANDS UP DON'T SHOOT signs too?

Can't tell if he went for his gun or not.

Didn't notice either of those, but BLM signs among others, people filming, police standing nearby. Nothing disorderly but first I've witnessed something like it firsthand.

As far as I'm aware, a cop has the same rights as a civilian: he may use lethal force if he honestly believes there is no other way to preserve his own or someone else's life. Personally, if I was struggling with a guy who had walked through a taser shot, if his hand gets anywhere near his gun, I'm turning his head into a canoe.

Again, this idiot's death was entirely self-inflicted. If he hadn't tried to resist arrest, he'd be in a jail cell right now, not a morgue. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Have we had any of the "shoot in the legs" as if that isn't deadly force crowd yet?

Honestly believing you are in danger doesn't make you in danger. You having a quick trigger finger doesn't make u justified in murdering someone you think may be a danger at some future point.

Thank goodness you're not a police officer. If we have too many who think of their suspects as simply bad rubbish who are disposable and not worth showing any actual restraint from deadly force then we'd be fucked. Unfortunately you do have the right to carry a gun. Let's hope you don't come across someone who you think is a danger to you.

Just thinking a situation may turn dangerous doesn't give you the right to kill.

And in this specific case, they were right.

Your article says right there that use of a firearm is permitted " When the arrest of all the "accused" of a felony or misdemeanor may be arrested red handedly in, or charged with a warrant of arrest issued if he resisted or tried to escape."
