US Homicide Rate at a 51 Year Low

Surprisingly, though, most Americans are unaware of this fact:

So, two questions:

1) Why have murder rates fallen so drastically in America?
2) Why is the public generally unaware of this trend?

(For the record, I know that a lot has been written and speculated about the first question. I am interested to see what people in here think, though.)

Murder rates were lower nationwide, but up in major cities. One potential argument against "sanctuary cities." And against big government policies that are exacerbated in some of our more heavily populated areas.

Facts: national murder rate is down per 2014.
Awesome

Facts: The overall murder rate in the US's 30-largest cities in 2016 climbed "by double digits,"

Both can be and are true.
Murder rates rose in major cities by about 10% in 2016 ... 10% up from the 2015 numbers, which were historically low.

A 10% rise in a little number is STILL a (relatively) little number.

Murder rates in the US, even in the vast majority of cities, are still FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR below their peak in the 1990's.

Seriously, how are you guys not getting this?

I'll put it another way: If I start out 100. Then I lose 80. Then I "go up 10%," I am still only at 22. Still down 78 from where I started.

Capiche?
