Adonis Stevenson “suffers from severe traumatic brain injury” which “requires mechanical respiratory assistance, deep sedation and specialized neurological monitoring” according to Dr. Alexis Turgeon, the specialist physician at the Quebec City hospital where the 41-year-old former world light heavyweight champion’s remained since last Saturday’s 11th-round knockout loss to Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Quebec City.

"Mr. Stevenson underwent surgery on the night of Saturday to Sunday and has since been admitted to the intensive care unit. He suffers from severe traumatic brain injury. His situation is still stable under the circumstances, but critical," said Turgeon, of The Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus, during a public update on Stevenson.

"His condition requires mechanical respiratory assistance, deep sedation and specialized neurological monitoring. It is too early to comment on Mr. Stevenson's long-term prognosis. I urge the media to be very cautious about distributing medical information that does not come from an official medical source.”

Doesn't sound very hopeful atm. I'm not a fan of what he's done in the past but I assume he changed and got his life back on track for boxing. Hopefully he pulls through without too much permanent damage.

Let's hope Adonis has a swift and FULL RECOVERY, aside from the fact that he is now officially retired. Prichard Colon was a real thing as of late... VERY SAD.

Therefore, as I said, Fury fans shouldn't joke about the Gypsie King's well being. If Fury starts to forget minor things months ahead, as in many cases of trauma to the brain such as mild concussions, he should reconsider stepping in with Wilder. I hate to say that. Wilder is a sharpshooter to the face

Damn, hope he can get right for retirement. Sad to see someone injured like that in the sport, regardless of their past. As a boxing fan, I don't want that to happen and thankfully it's rare, but it happens. Best of luck to him.

Canadian boxer Stevenson suffered 'severe traumatic brain injury': hospital
Canadian boxer Adonis Stevenson suffered a "severe traumatic brain injury" and remains in intensive care, his doctors said Wednesday, days after the fighter lost his World Boxing Council light heavyweight title to Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The 41-year-old underwent surgery after the Saturday...

well that second half was totally said out of the good of your heart and with no agenda whatsoever

That's not good news. I love boxing, but I want these guys leaving the ring in one piece, not leaving pieces of themselves behind in the ring... but they always lose a piece of themselves. It's just sometimes they lose more than they can afford to lose permanently, and I don't care who it is, it's dreadfully sad.

karma gets you eventually .. one way or another

I gave circumstance as to why, but whatever, then I wonder if Fury will get hurt again, let’s make it a Trilogy or a Pac Marquez 4! Why not 5?! Fury’s money goes to charity

yes, totally innocent and genuine, no possible other intentions!

If Fury and Wilder fight each other again and there's reason for 5 fights then i guess I'll watch them. Both seem physically fine so far.

Quick question...does anyone here think his long layoffs and carefully picked fights led to this? Had Adonis taken on one of the killers earlier in his career do you think he could've withstood the punishment better? Besides the end, this wasn't necessarily a brutal fight. The wear and tear started to really show in the Jack fight. Had he taken the tougher fights earlier, would he even be fighting now?

It's something I've been thinking about lately and would like to see what y'all think.

He’s past 40. He was fighting a sharpshooter in Gvozdyk whom throws down the middle like Rigo or Lara. Adonis took too many beautiful straight rights at close range. Look what happened to Angulo’s face when he took so many from Lara? A crazy ass hematoma that changed him thereafter. It’s a reason why Canelo did easy work against Angulo too. Had Angulo been past 40 I’m sure it would’ve been worse.

Gvozdyk is a badass fighter. Ukrainian school killing it atm.

He is a bad ass fighter and thats why he was a favorite going into the fight. Adonis being over 40 and beating Jack, imo gave him a false sense of where his skills really were.

There are other examples of fighters who did what Adonis did and aren't in the same dark situations he's in now. Fighting later in careers and preserving it has become a trend so it's something I'm going to keep an eye on.

Edit: Draw with Jack

TBF, Adonis only became a champ at the age of 35, a few months before turning 36, and before the fight with Jack he had rather easy fights for 2-3 years.
That said, his style was always based around being and explosive southpaw with scary power, he always relied on his natural athleticism and those are the kind of fighters that don't age too well, once they loose some of their speed they seem to get old really fast.

Those 2-3 years were crucial. It's a trend with today's boxers, especially Americans, that might do more harm than good for the fighter.
I think a Kovalev trilogy would've paid him well in that 2-3 period and in hindsight he would've done much better than most people thought.

BTW...hoping we see some progress from Adonis soon. Not looking good.

He probably would have lost sooner. Hard to say he'd even be in that fight.

It doesn't sound good for him. Hope he gets away with being more Spencer Oliver than Gerald McClellan.

Best luck to him. Merry Christmas to you Stevenson, hope you will wake up man. May God or whatever the fuck you believe in will be with you and your family.
