    Meltzers Newsletter:

UFC 216 on 10/7 at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The show did an announced 10,638 fans and a gate of $677,999.50. Keep in mind that in the last decade, the UFC has only had three PPV shows in Las Vegas do less than a $2 million gate. The previous low of $1,362,7000, for UFC 191 on September 5, 2015, was for Johnson’s second fight with John Dodson, who was the last guy to give him a competitive bout.

That number of fans would indicate either extremely heavy papering, or greatly discounting tickets after so few would have bought when they went on sale. We should know more about that next week.

As far as the other stats go, the prelims on FX did 653,000 viewers, peaking at 756,000 for the Cody Stamann win over Thomas Duquesnoy fight. That would be the lowest number of the few times prelims have aired on FX. There have been three prelims on FS 1 in history that have done lower numbers, but none since October 25, 2014. Aside from shows on FS 2 and the 9/9 show on FXX that did 418,000, it would be the lowest number for prelims in almost three years.

The show did have heavy competition, going head-to-head with five nationally televised college football games.

The pre-show on FX did 324,000 viewers. The postfight show did 221,000 viewers. The weigh-ins the night before did 171,000 viewers.

As far as PPV goes, prelim indications aren’t that strong. Very early indicators look up about 20 percent from last month, but that was a rock bottom 100,000 buy show.

    -

So early estimates are about 120k

Two back to back PPV's are combined under 250k
No way to spin those numbers

    Ouch for 213, 215, and 216.

    Combined total for those 3 PPV's = 350k.

That's what Cruz vs Faber II did in 2011 which was considered low end.

Honestly the proof is there to see. No matter how much they try to bullshit and say mighty mouse is the GOAT, it will never be true. His division does not sell and it never will. Strip the title and send him up to 135.

So PPV numbers equate to someone's P4P rankings.

Damn only 120k, I was expecting more than that, well I knew it would'nt be amazing numbers, but I was thinking around 250k give or take a little. Thats very low. But the prelims are free and even those numbers are very low, so thats worrying.

I knew the gate would be a lot lower in money because of all the free people there from the vegas shootings, the police, doctors/nurses and some of the family members etc etc.

They were shitty cards, nothing to worry about. Numbers for 217 and 218 will be good.

I was going to buy it anyway until Black Beast got taken off. Also they gave 1500 tickets away to victims and first responders, maybe thats where the gate numbers are off.

Vegas PPVs are known for a lot of walk up sales day of the event. I imagine that wasn't the case this time after the events that unfolded over there.

    Re: Bad gate
The reason they had all the tickets to give away was due to low interest.
They had the upper area blocked off.

Giving away so many tix was a very nice thing to do, but that did not take away from gate.
The shootings in Vegas of course hurt, but the card was not selling good anyway.

DJ didn't headline 213, 215, or 216. All of which did 130k or less.
There is a bigger problem here. Numbers are tanking everywhere.

A lot of tix are casino buys that they give to high rollers as comps
The tragedy certainly hurt, but it would have still been very bad

    MM just doesn’t draw.

He has had plenty of opportunity to do so, even put an interim title on his card.... such a shame for such a great fighter.

    You're probably right.

I feel like when tickets went on sale, Lee vs. Ferguson was a pretty dam small fight in terms of name value.

Things felt like they came into their own during fight week, but by then it was probably too late.

    They don't.

But it does show fans aren't buying into him being the p4p best fighter.

People didn't watch Mayweather because he was interesting. They watched because they wanted to see greatness.

They promoted him heavily on the lasy FOX card & it tanked as well.
Its a shame, but he can't get casuals interested.

I thought this would do better bc the top 3 fights were interesting, but I guess I'm more hardcore than I thought

How it seems to work is they buy the better seats fast (if the fight looks like a big event) & then if a hi-roller ask if the casino he is staying at has tix, they get more that week

I actually have a picture of the 216 ticketmaster seating chart after the first week of sales. Blue seats were available. The black lines were curtained off sections.
