Mandy Moore was phenomenal on This Is Us this week.

I have a love hate relationship with this show, but she was absolutely spectacular. She had a few excellent scenes this week but this one, this one was special.

You could feel the sorrow crash through her like an earthquake. It started with barely perceptible tremors; it took a moment for her to understand what it was. She struggled to control it, almost succeeded, just for a breath, before she was utterly crushed by it.

Amazon is developing drama series Conan, based on the books by Robert E. Howard, Deadline has learned. The project hails from Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, Fargo and The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield, Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.

Created and written by Condal, Conan retells the classic character’s story via a return to his literary origins. Driven out of his tribal homelands, Conan wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage.

Condal executive produces with Sapochnik, who will direct, and Littlefield. Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler will also executive produce via their Pathfinder Media banner with Endeavor Content as the studio.

The project falls into Amazon’s push into big, fantasy/genre drama series with broad appeal in the mold of Game of Thrones, which is exemplified by the company’s recent big bet on a Lord of the Rings TV series.

Condal admits to having a personal obsession with the material, which Sapochnik also has been a longtime fan of, leading to their collaboration on the project with the creative goal to return to the original Howard literary works and produce a series that is faithful to the spirit of his Conan character. Conan the Barbarian, aka Conan the Cimmerian, was created by Howard in 1932 in a series of fantasy stories published in Weird Tales magazine.

The character has been the subject of a number of screen adaptations, most famously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the big screen. There have been two animated TV series and a short-lived 1997 syndicated action-adventure series, Conan the Adventurer, toplined by Ralf Möller.

Condal is the co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of USA’s drama series Colony, currently in its third season. On the film side, he is currently adapting Logan’s Run for Warner Bros and previously wrote a movie about another muscled hero, Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson.

Sapochnik won an Emmy and DGA Award for outstanding directing for the Game of Thrones episode “Battle of the Bastards.” Most recently, he directed the opening episode for Netflix’s Altered Carbon, and is set to direct Bios for Amblin Entertainment, starring Tom Hanks, with Robert Zemeckis and Kevin Misher producing.

This could work very well.

I've always been of the opinion that the original Howard stories and the Hyborian Age setting let themselves better to a TV series format of storytelling rather than to movies. A TV series would give more time to explore the fact that OG Conan was a cunning tactician, an observant guy and a hell of a lot more articulate than people used to the Schwarzenegger version would believe possible. And he wore armor and pants as often as not.

I had always assumed that the people holding the rights would never give up on trying to make it a film franchise, so the closest I expected to get was a Red Sonja show, but it seems that the age of Netflix and Amazon has changed that.

But please, no more burning his village and killing his parents. Howard's Conan doesn't need a life-long revenge quest for motivation, he just enjoys the lifestyle.
 
Arnold Schwarzenegger to Star in OUTRIDER Western TV Series from Amazon

Amazon is developing Outrider, a Western drama series with Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star and executive produce, Deadline has learned. Also executive producing the project is Mace Neufeld, exec producer of Amazon’s upcoming series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

Co-written/executive produced by Trey Callaway (APB, The Messengers, CSI: NY) and Mark Montgomery, Outrider is a mystery set in the Oklahoma Indian Territory in the late 1800s. It tells the dark and dangerous tale of a deputy who is not only tasked by a notoriously brutal judge with apprehending a legendary outlaw in the wilderness – but must also partner with a ruthless Federal Marshall to make sure justice is properly served. And as the story unfolds, not only will enemies become allies, but a series of unpredictable surprises will blur the line between good guys and bad.

Austrian-born Schwarzenegger would play the Federal Marshal who immigrated to the US from Europe as a child.

Outrider would mark the first major scripted TV series role for The Terminator and True Lies star and former California governor. On the unscripted side, he did a one-season stint as star and executive producer of NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice, replacing Donald Trump.

Disney Developing More Than One STAR WARS TV Series for Its Streaming Service

Fresh off of news that Game of Thrones creators/showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be creating a new trilogy of Star Wars feature films, Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors Tuesday that the company is developing more than one Star Wars TV series.

"We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct-to-consumer app. We've mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn't completely closed, we can't be specific about that," he said during an earnings call Tuesday. "I think you'll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well."

Iger first announced that Disney was developing a live-action Star Wars TV series in November when he revealed that the company's forthcoming direct-to-consumer digital platform would also feature a Monsters, Inc. and High School Musical series. It's unclear if the other Star Wars TV series for the Disney digital platform will also be live-action.

The as-yet-untitled Disney digital platform will target families and debut in late 2019, the company said Tuesday. Disney has already pulled its Marvel features from rival Netflix in anticipation of the launch.

While Benioff and Weiss would seem to be prime candidates to create a live-action Star Wars TV series given their success in building HBO's Emmy-winning genre hit Game of Thrones, Iger used his time with investors Tuesday to explain why they'd be fronting a new trilogy for Disney's film unit.

"Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we've actually been talking to them for a long time," Iger said. "To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for a number of films and at some later date I'm sure we'll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there."

The series adaptation of the action film “Hanna” at Amazon has found its three leads, Variety has learned.​

Esme Creed-Miles, Joel Kinnaman, and Mireille Enos will star in the drama, which was ordered straight-to-series at Amazonlast May. In addition, Sarah Adina Smith is set to direct. Her previous directing credits include the FX series “Legion,” the HBO series “Room 104,” and the film “Buster’s Mal Heart.”

Written by David Farr, who co-wrote the original film, “Hanna” follows the journey of a young girl with extraordinary skills as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is.​

They seem to have decided not to make the title character as young as in the movie.

They’re also going to need to beef up the mythology. The plot-line of the movie might do for a season, but it would get stale after that.

Some shows do the right thing, which is their own thing, as opposed to retreading the movie for as many seasons as they can until cancellation.

I'm nearly caught up on Riverdale.

I started watching out of curiosity, then out of morbid curiosity at the audacity of playing a straight-faced "dark sexy teen drama" with this source material, evolved into liking it as background noise - then felt like it was getting cheesy to the point that I might just drop it, to now thinking it actually is doing a service to the highschool drama genre in some ways.

And it can be all these things at once. This is a show that only works in the age of limitless options, but it's a surprisingly great fit for it.
